The day began with high hopes as double Olympic medallist PV Sindhu took to the court for her women’s singles match. Sindhu displayed her prowess by pocketing the first game 21-18. However, the match took a dramatic turn when the second game was leveled at 1-1, and Sindhu experienced discomfort in her left knee.

The injury occurred as she stretched herself too far to return a shot from her Thai opponent, Supanida Katethong. In a bid to continue, Sindhu sought medical attention, applying the magic spray and consulting with the tournament doctor. She also discussed the situation with her coach, Hafiz Hashim, and received a yellow card before making the heart-wrenching decision to concede the match to Katethong, who advanced to the quarterfinals.

Despite the unfortunate outcome, it’s worth noting that Sindhu had showcased her tenacity in the opening round, where she defeated the seventh seed, Gregoria Mariska Tunjung of Indonesia, in a closely-fought battle. Sindhu’s journey in the French Open may have ended prematurely, but her previous victory signaled her return to the top 10 of the BWF world rankings after nearly six months.

In the men’s doubles category, the third-seeded Indian duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty had a tough task ahead of them as they faced the Indonesian pair of Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan in the round of 16. The match proved to be a keenly-contested battle that went the distance. In a nail-biting encounter, the Indian duo narrowly fell short, losing to the experienced Indonesian pair with a final score of 23-25, 21-19, 19-21.

While the loss was undoubtedly a setback for Satwik and Chirag, it showcased the intensity and competitiveness of the men’s doubles event at the French Open. The Indonesian pair’s experience and ability to perform under pressure ultimately saw them through to the next round, ending India’s campaign in the men’s doubles category.

As the French Open progresses, Indian badminton enthusiasts will be left hoping for better fortunes in upcoming tournaments. Injuries can be a cruel twist of fate in the world of sports, and the resilience shown by PV Sindhu in her comeback journey is a testament to the determination of Indian athletes. While the French Open may not have yielded the desired results, it’s a valuable learning experience for the Indian contingent as they prepare for future challenges on the badminton circuit.
