Colombia holds Brazil to 1-1 draw, Both advance to Copa America quarterfinals
In a thrilling Copa America group stage finale, Colombia battled back from a goal down to secure a 1-1 draw against Brazil on Tuesday night. This result secured Colombia’s top spot in Group D and set up an exciting quarter-final clash against Panama.
While Brazil opened the scoring with a spectacular free-kick from Raphinha in the 12th minute, Colombia displayed their resilience, equalizing through Daniel Munoz in first-half stoppage time. This hard-earned point sends them into the knockout stages with their unbeaten streak intact, extending it to an impressive 26 games.

Colombia started the match with the stronger side, with James Rodriguez forcing a great save from Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson early on. However, it was Brazil who struck first. In the 12th minute, Raphinha stepped up to take a free-kick and curled a beautiful shot into the top corner, leaving the Colombian keeper with no chance.

Despite conceding the goal, Colombia remained composed and continued to threaten the Brazilian defense. Rodriguez himself had a chance to equalize but volleyed his shot over the bar. They thought they had found their equalizer shortly after when Davinson Sanchez headed home following a pinpoint cross by Rodriguez, but the goal was disallowed for offside after a VAR review.
The frustration on the pitch began to boil over as both teams received a flurry of yellow cards midway through the first half. However, Colombia didn’t let that deter them. Just before halftime, their persistence paid off. A superb pass from veteran forward Jhon Cordoba found Crystal Palace defender Daniel Munoz in space, and he blasted the ball home to level the score.
Colombia continued to control the game in the second half and should have secured the win. Substitute Rafael Borre had a golden opportunity in the closing minutes but skied his shot from close range. Ultimately, the 1-1 draw was a fair reflection of the match, with both teams showcasing moments of brilliance.
For Colombia, this result is a testament to their impressive form. Their unbeaten streak continues, and they will head into their quarter-final against Panama full of confidence.
Meanwhile, Brazil, despite dropping points, still advanced to the knockout stages. However, their path to the title just got a whole lot tougher. Their quarter-final opponent will be their arch-rivals, Uruguay, who finished top of Group C with a perfect record.
While the draw means they face a sterner test in the next round, Brazilian players like Raphinha remain confident. He emphasized that the team is focused on improvement and is ready to face any opponent.
“Our team is evolving with each game, with each training session and we think we’re on the right track,” Raphinha said. “Whoever wants to be champion shouldn’t be worrying about who they play in the next round; we have to be prepared for anyone.”
Brazil will have to overcome the loss of key player Vinicius Jr., who received his second yellow card of the tournament and will miss the quarter-final against Uruguay. Despite this setback, Brazil’s fighting spirit and overall talent cannot be ignored.
The stage is set for an epic Copa America quarter-final clash between Brazil and Uruguay. Colombia, on the other hand, will be looking to continue their unbeaten run against Panama.
