USA crashes out of Copa America after loss to Uruguay, Panama secures quarter-final berth

The United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) suffered a disappointing exit from the Copa America on Monday, falling 1-0 to Uruguay in their final Group C match. This loss, coupled with Panama’s 3-1 victory over Bolivia, meant the USMNT finished bottom of the group and failed to qualify for the knockout stages.

The American team, already reeling from a shock 2-1 defeat to Panama in their opening match, needed a win or a result that mirrored Panama’s against Bolivia to progress. However, a resolute Uruguayan defense and the team’s struggles to create clear-cut opportunities resulted in a frustrating night for the USMNT faithful.

“It’s tough right now,” a visibly disappointed US captain Christian Pulisic stated after the match. “We came out strong with a lot of energy, but just couldn’t find the quality we needed. We searched for solutions, but they just weren’t there.”

The night started with a glimmer of hope when news filtered through that Panama had taken an early lead against Bolivia. A Bolivian equalizer in the second half further boosted American spirits, momentarily putting them back in contention for qualification, provided they could hold off Uruguay.

However, those hopes were dashed in the 66th minute when Uruguay took a controversial lead through Mathias Olivera. Following a free-kick, Ronald Araujo’s powerful header was saved by US goalkeeper Matt Turner, but Olivera pounced on the rebound to put the ball in the net. Replays suggested Olivera might have been offside in the build-up, but after a lengthy VAR (Video Assistant Referee) review, the Peruvian referee Kevin Ortega awarded the goal to Uruguay.

Meanwhile, Panama re-established their lead against Bolivia with a goal from Eduardo Guerrero, further diminishing the Americans’ chances. The final nail in the coffin came deep into stoppage time when Cesar Yanis scored Panama’s third, sealing their victory and officially eliminating the USMNT from the tournament.

This early exit from the Copa America raises significant questions about the future of head coach Gregg Berhalter. He has faced mounting criticism from fans, particularly regarding the team’s struggles against top-ranked opponents. Since his return as coach in June 2023, Berhalter has only managed five wins in 20 matches against teams ranked in the top 20, with four of those victories coming against regional rivals Mexico, who also exited the Copa America in the group stage.

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico looming large, the pressure is on Berhalter to demonstrate his ability to guide the USMNT to success on home soil. The team’s performance at the Copa America has undoubtedly thrown his position under scrutiny, and the coming months will be crucial in determining his future with the national team.
