Champions Trophy 2025: Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood Ruled Out
Australia faces a tough road ahead in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy. Just weeks before the tournament kicks off on February 19th, the team has been hit with a series of injury setbacks and a key retirement, forcing significant changes to their squad. These changes raise questions about team balance and leadership as they prepare to face some of the world’s best cricket nations.
The most significant blows come in the form of injuries to key players. Captain Pat Cummins, a vital player in Australia’s bowling attack, will miss the tournament. Cummins has been battling an injury sustained after the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against India. He was already absent from the current Test series against Sri Lanka, and unfortunately, he hasn’t recovered in time for the Champions Trophy. His absence leaves a big hole in both the bowling attack and the leadership group.
Adding to the injury woes, fast bowler Josh Hazlewood will also miss the Champions Trophy. Hazlewood suffered a hip injury during the third Test against India in Brisbane. His controlled pace and ability to swing the ball make him a crucial asset for Australia, and his absence is another significant loss for the team. The double blow of losing both Cummins and Hazlewood weakens their bowling strength.

These injuries aren’t the only changes Australia will have to make. All-rounder Marcus Stoinis has announced his retirement from One-Day Internationals (ODis) and has also withdrawn from the Champions Trophy squad. Stoinis was a valuable player for Australia, providing batting firepower in the lower middle order and contributing useful overs with the ball. His decision to retire from ODIs comes as a surprise and further complicates Australia’s preparations.
With these three withdrawals, Australia needs to make at least three changes to their provisional squad. As George Bailey, the national selection panel chairperson, said “Unfortunately Pat, Josh and Mitch [Marsh] are managing some ongoing injuries and haven’t come up in time for the Champion’s Trophy.”
He also acknowledged that this disaster also presents an opportunity to the players who will be representing the country. He said, “While disappointing, it does present a great opportunity for other players to perform for Australia in a world event.”
The absence of Cummins also raises the question of who will captain the With Cummins unavailable, the captaincy likely falls to either Travis Head or Steve Smith. Smith recently led the Test team in Sri Lanka, indicating he’s back in favour with the selectors. Head, on the other hand, has shown leadership potential and is a rising star in the Australian setup. The selectors have a tough decision to make, as both players bring different qualities to the captaincy role.
Australia has been placed in Group B for the Champions Trophy alongside England, South Africa, and Afghanistan. It’s a challenging group, and with their injury problems, Australia faces a tough test to progress to the knockout stages. England, as the host nation, will have the home advantage, while South Africa boasts a strong and balanced team. Afghanistan, though the underdogs have shown they can be dangerous on their day.
