Aston Villa recover from controversial VAR call to defeat Burnley 2-1

Aston Villa secured a much-needed 2-1 victory at Turf Moor, despite another controversial VAR decision denying Jack Grealish a goal.

VAR threatened to steal the limelight once again this season in a Premier League match when it disallowed Jack Gralish’s opener in the 11th minute of the match.

The playmaker headed home Ezri Konsa’s cross in what appeared at first glance to be a straightforward opener, however striker Wesley was deemed to be millmetres offside in the build-up after a VAR check and the goal was ruled out.

16 minutes later, Grealish assisted Wesley to help Aston Villa go 1-0 up in the match. Soon, Grealish made it 2-0 on the stroke of half-time with a powerful strike inside the box.

Chris Wood pulled one back for Burnley with ten minutes left to set up a thrilling finale but Dean Smith’s side held out to claim only their second away win of the season and move out of the relegation zone.

Smith reacted to Villa’s 3-0 defeat at the weekend by 10-man Watford by making five changes and switching formation.

Tyrone Mings returned from hamstring injury as he formed part of a back three, while Neil Taylor, Frederic Guilbert, Marvelous Nakamba and Trezeguet also made it to the playing eleven.

There were a couple of injuries for the visitors in the match as the Lion’s goalkeeper was stretchered off after appearing to jar his knee while trying to keep out Wood’s header. Striker Wesley was forced out of the match in a similar fashion earlier in the half.

Villa pick up their first victory this season in Premier League since beating Norwich City 5-1 in October. The visitors also celebrated their first league win at Turf Moor since 1936 to lift some pressure on manager Dean Smith.

Burnley’s defeat meanwhile was their third in a row in the Premier League.
