Annabel Sutherland Smashes Splendid Century in Women Ashes

Annabel Sutherland, the Australian all-rounder, made headlines in the women’s Ashes Test at Trent Bridge with her outstanding batting performance. Sutherland smashed a splendid century, setting a new record for the fastest Test hundred by an Australian woman.

Resuming at 39 on the second day, Sutherland displayed great composure and skill as she reached her maiden international century in less than two hours. She had already faced a challenging period on the opening day when she came to the crease with Australia struggling at 6-238. However, she weathered the storm and settled into her inning, ultimately achieving her first-ever fifty in any international format from 100 deliveries.

Sutherland’s innings gained momentum as she grew in confidence against the red ball. She accelerated her scoring rate, taking just 48 balls to score her next 50 runs. In the process, she etched her name in the record books by recording the fourth-fastest century in women’s Tests. This remarkable feat also surpassed the previous Australian record held by Jill Kennare, who scored a century in 156 balls against England in 1984. Notably, Sutherland became only the third woman to score a Test century while batting at No.8.

The ongoing Ashes Test is Sutherland’s third appearance in the Baggy Green, having made her debut against India in 2021. Her breakthrough century comes on the back of a remarkable batting display in the three-day warm-up game in Leicester, where she also scored a century while opening the innings.

Although Sutherland has primarily been regarded as a bowler at the international level, her recent performances with the bat have showcased her potential as an all-round asset. With Australia boasting a strong batting lineup, Sutherland has often been deployed more as a bowler in her 34 matches across all formats, featuring in just her 16th innings.

However, her development as a batswoman has been evident in domestic cricket, where she excelled with two centuries in six 50-over matches last season. Her century in the ongoing Ashes Test not only propelled Australia’s total past 400 but also put them in a commanding position in the game.

Sutherland’s outstanding achievement demonstrates her immense talent and bodes well for the future of Australian women’s cricket. Her ability to contribute with both bat and ball adds depth to the team and makes her a valuable asset in all formats of the game. As she continues to develop her skills, cricket fans can look forward to witnessing more memorable performances from this talented all-rounder.
