Andrew Balbirnie Biography

Andrew Balbirnie, The current captain of the Ireland cricket team in all formats, was born on 28 December 1990. Balbirnie, a right-handed batsman and occasional wicket-keeper, plays right-handed. Andrew Balbirnie was raised in Dublin and attended St Andrew’s College for his education.

Career

Andrew Balbirnie participated in Ireland’s inaugural Test match against Pakistan in the month of May of the year 2018 as one of the 11 cricketers that took the pitch. In the month of December of the year 2018, Cricket Ireland awarded core contracts to 19 players for the 2019 season. Andrew Balbirnie was one of them.

After William Porterfield resigned as captain of Ireland’s Test and ODI teams in the month of November of the year 2019, Balbirnie was appointed. Later that month, Andrew Balbirnie was chosen to succeed Gary Wilson as captain of Ireland’s Twenty20 International (T20I) side. Andrew Balbirnie was one of 19 players who received a central contract from Cricket Ireland in the month of January of the year 2020. This was the very first year that all the contracts were given out on a full-time basis.

Early and domestic career

Balbirnie has represented Ireland at the U-19 level in nine Youth One Day Internationals. Ireland’s Under-19 World Cup Qualifying squad won in the year 2009 under the direction of Andrew Balbirnie. Ireland’s Under-19 cricket team won the match, earning them a spot in the 2010 U-19 Cricket World Cup.

In a 2015–17 ICC Intercontinental Cup match between Ireland and the Netherlands on August 15, of the year 2017, Balbirnie achieved his first century in a first-class game.

With 262 runs in six games, Balbirnie led all scorers in the 2018 Inter-Provincial Trophy competition. Andrew Balbirnie topped the Leinster Lightning in run production in the 2018 Inter-Provincial Championship with 302 runs in four games.

Balbirnie was chosen to represent the Dublin Chiefs in the first-ever Euro T20 Slam cricket competition in the month of July of the year 2019. However, the Euro T20 Slam cricket tournament didn’t take place the next month. 

International Career

Balbirnie, a member of Ireland’s 2010 ICC (International Cricket Council) World Cricket League Division One winning team, made his List A debut in a One Day International against Scotland. Andrew Balbirnie played three further One Day Internationals before being named in Ireland’s 15-man squad for the 2015 Cricket World Cup. Balbirnie made his Twenty20 International debut against Scotland on 19 June 2015 but was unable to play due to rain. In the year 2016, Andrew Balbirnie was named in Ireland’s 15-man squad for the 2016 T20 World Cup. Balbirnie played in Ireland’s 100th international match in the month of May of the year 2019, and in the month of September of the year 2019, Andrew Balbirnie was named Ireland’s all formats captain.

In the month of July of the year 2020, Balbirnie scored his 2,000th run in ODI (One Day International) cricket, leading Ireland to their first-ever ODI (One Day International) victory against South Africa. In the month of September of the year 2021, Balbirnie was named the captain of Ireland’s provisional squad for the 2021 ICC (International Cricket Council) Men’s T20 World Cup.
