Born on May 27, 1993, Amrinder Singh has solidified his position as a prominent figure in Indian football, guarding the net for both the esteemed India national team and the dynamic Indian Super League club Odisha. Early life and youth career
Amrinder Ranjit Singh was born in Mahilpur, Punjab, India, on May 27, of the year 1993. Amrinder began playing football when Singh was a young child, but Singh didn’t play regularly until he was 15 years old and entered the Sports Wing Academy, a government-run academy in Paldi, Hoshiarpur, Punjab. Amrinder began his career at Sports Wing Academy’s under-17 level as a striker, but his coach, Yarvinder Singh, saw that Amrinder had a decent build and reach and urged him to become a goalie.
Singh stayed at the Sports Wing Academy for an additional two years when he began to develop as a goalie. However, Amrinder was chosen by the Punjab Football Association to play for the Punjab state national team at the under-17 and under-19 levels while still at Sports Wing.
Singh’s contribution to Punjab winning the BC Roy Trophy was his biggest accomplishment while playing for the team. Asim Hassan, a former player from Pune who is now a well-known coach in Punjab, suggested that Singh take a trial at the Pune Academy after winning the BC Roy Trophy. Singh was admitted to the under-19 squad after passing the trial.
Football Club Career
Amrinder Singh, a goalkeeper from Pune, made his debut for the first team squad at the age of 18. He made his I-League debut in the 2011 Indian Federation Cup against East Bengal, where Pune lost 1–2. Amrinder Ranjit Singh also played his first football match of the 2012-13 I-League season against the team of ONGC F.C., which ended 1–0. He continued to maintain a clean sheet in the following matches against Air India FC and Indian Arrows.
In the 2013–14 I-League season, Amrinder Ranjit Singh started as Pune’s No.1 goalkeeper, starting in their first league match against Mohammedan on 21 September of the year 2013. He kept five clean sheets in a row before conceding two goals and losing 2–0 to Sporting Goa on 2 November. Singh received a red card in the 81st minute for bringing down the last man on the ball for Sporting Goa.
In the month of January of the year 2014, Amrinder Ranjit Singh made his international club debut for the football team of Pune in their qualifier tie of AFC Champions League against the football club team of Hanoi T&T. He played the full ninety minutes in goal but could not stop Pune from giving away three goals in a 3–0 defeat.
Amrinder started his 2014-15 I-League season with Pune, winning his first match against Salgaocar on 17 January. He won his first match against Bengaluru on 24 January, but lost his first match against Mohun Bagan on 7 February. Amrinder’s last match for Pune was against Sporting Goa on 30 May 2015, which ended in a 4–0 loss.
Amrinder was loaned to Indian Super League club ATK for the 2015 season, playing in a 2–3 victory against Chennaiyin FC. Amrinder Ranjit Singh kept his first clean sheet on 23 October against NorthEast United and lost his first game in goal against Delhi Dynamos on 29 October. ATK went through the 2015 ISL playoffs but lost to Chennaiyin FC on an aggregate score of 4–2.
Amrinder signed for Bengaluru on loan for the 2015-16 I-League season. He kept his first clean sheet in his first match against East Bengal, but lost his first match in goal against Sporting Goa and conceded five goals in a disastrous match against Mohun Bagan. Despite the loss, Bengaluru won the I-League and Amrinder won the best goalkeeper award.
Amrinder, a goalkeeper from Pune, signed for Bengaluru in the 2016-17 I-League season. He played his first match against Shillong Lajong and kept his first clean sheet in the first match. He also played in Bengaluru’s 7–0 victory over DSK Shivajians. In the year 2017, Amrinder Ranjit Singh signed a three-year contract with Mumbai City FC, keeping him at the club until the month of May of the year 2021. He played his first match in the 2018-19 Indian Super League season against Jamshedpur and FC Pune City, but suffered a disastrous 5–0 loss against FC Goa. Despite this, Mumbai won their last match against Chennaiyin FC.
In the 2019-20 Indian Super League season, Amrinder played his first match in a 0–1 victory over Kerala Blasters. However, Mumbai lost their first match against Odisha FC and faced five goals in a 5–2 loss against FC Goa. Amrinder left the club after playing 84 matches, becoming the most capped player in the history of Mumbai City FC. Amrinder Singh signed with ATK Mohun Bagan FC on a five-year deal in May 2021. He played in the club’s 2021 AFC Cup group stage matches in the Maldives and the 2021–22 Indian Super League season. Singh played all four matches and kept a clean sheet against Bengaluru FC. In the 2022 AFC Cup squad, he played two matches. On 8 September of the year 2022, Amrinder Ranjit Singh left ATK Mohun Bagan by mutual consent.
Singh joined Odisha FC on a one-year deal and played a significant role in their success, qualifying for their first-ever Hero ISL playoffs. He made 55 saves across 21 games and registered two clean sheets. Odisha won their first trophy since its inception, defeating Bengaluru in the final. Singh signed a new contract with Odisha for another three years, lasting until at least 2026.
International Football Career
Amrinder, a former India U23 player, made his international debut in the year 2017 against the football team of Mauritius and was called up for the 2018 Intercontinental Cup. Amrinder Ranjit Singh played in one match against the football team of New Zealand in the tournament, but only played in one match against North Korea.
Amrinder was called up for the Indian squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers but played in no games. Amrinder Ranjit Singh played for the national team in a 1-1 draw against Oman and a 2-1 win over Nepal. In the 2023 Tri-Nation Series against Myanmar, Amrinder Ranjit Singh played in place of Gurpreet, who had played in the 2023 Indian Super League final.
