All the IPL franchises asked to present list of retained players by November 15

IPL auction 2022

In recent developments, the IPL auction process has started to take shape as all the teams have been asked to put forth the list of retained players by November 15th. The auction is meanwhile most likely to be held by the 3rd week of December.

After the addition of two new franchises last year, a Mega auction took place which enabled the teams to retain a maximum of 4 player but this year a mini auction will be on display ahead of the 2023 IPL edition. Rupees 5 Crore will be added to every team’s purse alongside the remaining amount from last year.

If we talk about the leftover amount for every team then Punjab Kings have the largest purse with Rs. 3.45 Crore, 4 time champions Chennai Super Kings have Rs. 2.95 Crores, Royal Challengers Bangalore contain Rs. 1.55 Crores, inaugural champions Rajasthan Royals got only 0.95 Crores and 2-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders are with 0.45 Crores.

New entrants Lucknow Super Giants spent all of their money during last year’s IPL auction, reigning champions Gujarat Titans are left with 0.15 Crores and Mumbai Indians, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals only have 0.15 Crores left with them.

Can we expect heavy bidding for IPL 2023 Mini Auction?

Over the last couple of years, Mini auctions have seen franchises bid aggressively and some of the most expensive buys have come from the mini auctions itself. During the 2021 auction Royal Challengers Bangalore bought South-African All-rounder Chris Morris for a whopping Rs. 16.25 Crores, which was even higher than Yuvraj Singh’s price in 2015 IPL when Delhi Daredevils acquired his services for Rs. 16 Crores.

Australian Pacer Pat Cummins bagged a sum of Rs.15.5 Crores by Kolkata Knight Riders in 2020 IPL auction whereas English All-rounder Ben Stokes was introduced in the auction in 2017 and Rising Pune Super Giant bought him into the team for Rs. 14.50 Crores.

There will be plenty more Foreign options in front of the franchises this time around as players like Sam Curran and Cameron Green can see a heavy bidding tussle for them during the auction later this December. Teams like Delhi Capitals, Punjab kings and Lucknow Super Giants will be on the hunt for more foreign players after they brought only 7 overseas last term.

Teams can also release some foreign as well as local players to make way for new players and also to increase their purse limits. As always there were also some replacements of foreign players last year due to injuries or personal reasons and now it is up to the owners to decide whether they want to retain the original player or its replacement. They can however choose to retain both in case the IPL criteria allows them.

Below is the list of players originally bought and their replacements :-

  1. Adam Milne, replaced by Matheesha Pathirana (Super Kings)
  2. Tymal Mills, replaced by Tristan Stubbs (Mumbai)
  3. Nathan Coulter-Nile, replaced by Corbin Bosch
  4. (Royals) Mark Wood, replaced by Andrew Tye (Super Giants)
  5. Alex Hales, replaced by Aaron Finch (Knight Riders)
  6. Jason Roy, replaced by Rahmanullah Gurbaz (Titans)
