Most hat-trick in T20 world cups

Although T20 cricket favors Batsmen most of the times, Bowlers are known for being at the receiving end. However, bowlers are also as an important asset for the team. There are some bowlers who have mastered the art of conceding less runs and picking wickets at regular intervals.

We have often spoke about the importance of having a good economy but in this article, Sportzcraazy will acknowledge the bowlers that took a hat-trick during ICC T20 World cup.

1. Brett Lee

First bowler to take a hat-trick in T20 world cup

Fearsome Australian legend and former Pacer Brett Lee was the first bowler to achieve this remarkable record during the inaugural edition of the T20 World cup in 2007. Australia were facing Bangladesh in the 14th match of the league stages and that’s when “Binga” removed 3 Bangladeshi batters in a row and became the man of the match for the same. As a result Bangladesh were restricted to a total of 127 which Australia chased down very easily. Brett Lee came to bowl the 17th over and dismissed Shakib Al-Hasan, Mashrafe Mortaza and Alok Kapali in the 3rd,4th and 5th delivery. Lee’s hat-trick added salt to the wounds of Bangladesh as the Speed star conceded only 27 runs with 3 wickets to his name.

2. Curtis Campher

Hat-tricks in T20 world cup

The second hat-trick in the history of ICC T20 World cup came 14 years after the first one. During the 2021 edition, Ireland were up against Netherlands for the third fixture and the Dutch were batting first after winning the toss. The Dutch were bowled out for only 106 and it was Curtis Campher who made all the news. The Orange were off to a decent start but their innings came to a halt as Campher set up a record of his own. Not only did he become the second bowler to take a hat-trick but he also became the first bowler to take 4 wickets in a row. The 23-year-old came to bowl the 10th over and removed Colin Ackermann, Ryan Ten Doeschate, Scott Edwards and Roelof Van der Merwe in the 2nd,3rd,4th and 5th delivery. He also bagged home the Man of the match award for his figures of 4/26.

3. Wanindu Hasaranga

Most hat trick in T20 World cups

Once the second hat-trick of the T20 World cup came after 14 years, the third one also came in the same edition. This time Wanindu Hasaranga from Sri-Lanka took the honors. The Lankans were facing a tough challenge in the form of South Africa and the former team were all out for only 142 runs. South-Africans chased the total easily but Hasaranga’s spell saw him enter the history books. He came to bowl his second spell and recorded a hat-trick to halt the South African pursuit. In order to get his team into the game, he dismissed Aiden Markram, Temba Bavuma, and Dwaine Pretorius on three consecutive balls.

4. Kagiso Rabada

Most dangerous bowlers

The South-African spearhead is probably one of the best bowlers in the world at the moment. His daunting pace, line and length has feared even the most dangerous batter in the world. The 27-year-old joined Campher and Hasaranga to notch a hat-trick in the same edition. Kagiso Rabada’s hat-trick came in the 39th fixture of the 2021 edition and this time England became the recipients. The Englishmen were chasing a target of 190 and the run chase was pretty much on as 14 runs were required in the final 6 balls. It was Rabada who was given the responsibility to win the match for South Africa and Rabada responded with a hat-trick. He aided for the departure of batters like Eoin Morgan, Chris Woakes and Chris Jordan in the first three balls. His hat-trick sealed the win for South Africa with Rassie Ven Der Dussen taking the man of the match award for his 96 off 60.

5. Kartik Meiyappan

It was the 6th match of the Group stages of the on-going T20 World cup in Australia as Sri-Lanka and UAE squared off for a place in the Super 12. The Lankans batted first and asked UAE to make 153 in order to win the match. UAE responded weakly as they could only manage to score 73 runs but during Sri-Lanka’s batting, it was Kartik Meiyappan who joined the likes of Brett Lee, Kagiso Rabada, Wanindu Hasaranga and Curtis Campher. The Indian born UAE leg-spinner bowled 3 outstanding deliveries to trick Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Charith Asalanka and Dasun Shanaka in the 14th over of the first innings.

In two days time, the Super 12 of the ICC T20 world cup 2022 will begin. We can expect to see a lot of fireworks and maybe a few more hat-tricks as well.
