Unveiling the Enigma of Grandmasters: Eligibility, Criteria, and the Esteemed List of Chess Grandmasters in India

10 Reasons Why Freestyle Chess Format will have no Future in Years to Come

Chess as entity has grown extremely popular in India and credit should be given to all stakeholders who have worked hard behind the scenes to make this entity extremely popular.

There are three form of Chess mostly played in International Chess Ecosystem- Rapid, Blitz and Freestyle Chess.

Based on latest point of view, Chess Olympian Sandipan Chanda, who is associated with Vishwanathan Anand Chess academy said while talking to TOI “Freestyle Chess Tournament is easy to learn and execute as compare to other form as there is no much technicality involved in it”

He added “Freestyle Chess is giving more fascination to all those players and people who already know a lot about Classical chess. In that way, I have doubts that Freestyle chess format can sustain in its own in times to come as standalone format”.

He concluded that his statement that many experts till date have even failed to find out Opening Pair of Normal Chess as almost all games must are mostly ending in a pulsating draw but he appreciated efforts of Magnus Carlsen for taking initiatives in bringing investors taking interest towards taking interest in Freestyle Chess tournament and he is doing stuff for sure.

Let’s dwell deeper into 10 reasons on Why Freestyle Chess Tournament Can’t sustain for long in the world to be shared in the below format:

  1. Inadequate Loss in Human Creativity:  The core appeal of traditional chess lies in the genius of human creativity. Iconic games by Fischer, Kasparov, or Anand are celebrated not just for the moves but for the thought process behind them. In freestyle chess, where computers generate many of the decisions, the human element is diminished. In a world where original thought is celebrated and duplication discouraged, a format dominated by engine-led moves feels sterile and uninspired. It becomes difficult to admire a masterpiece if one knows it was composed by silicon, not the soul.

  1. Ownership issues:  Who owns the brilliance of a move in freestyle chess? In a world increasingly emphasizing intellectual ownership and anti-plagiarism ethics, freestyle chess finds itself in murky waters. If a player wins thanks to Stockfish’s analysis, can they truly claim credit? This ambiguity dilutes the sense of achievement and originality, ultimately discouraging long-term interest.

  1. Technological least advancements : Freestyle chess inherently favors those with better hardware, software, and internet access. This creates a technological arms race that is not based on chess skill but on resource availability. In many cases, richer players or teams can access more advanced neural network engines or faster processing speeds, giving them an unfair edge. In an equitable world where intellectual merit is supposed to prevail, this undermines the democratic spirit of sport.

  1. Decline in Spectator Interest:  Appeal A significant reason traditional chess has grown in popularity—especially during the digital boom—is the ability of spectators to follow, analyze, and learn from games. Freestyle chess complicates this. When both sides are using engines, the moves often become too abstract or inhuman for general audiences to relate to or understand. The connection between the viewer and the game breaks down, reducing long-term fan engagement.

  1. Ethical Fair Play Problems:  While freestyle chess explicitly allows engine use, the line between assistance and automation often blurs. Many games devolve into engine vs. engine battles, where the human player is merely pressing keys. This raises ethical concerns, especially in team formats where it’s unclear who is actually doing what. In a world sensitive to plagiarism and academic honesty, this grey zone makes freestyle chess ethically unattractive.

  1. Misalignment in Skill Recognition : They signify years of hard work, pattern recognition, and intuitive thinking. Freestyle chess flattens this recognition. A 1600-rated player with a strong engine can easily outperform a Grandmaster, leading to confusion in skill hierarchy. When every good move is machine-generated, it becomes difficult to separate talent from tool, and the entire rating system loses meaning.

Delving Deeper: Exploring the Five Intriguing Factors Fueling Chess's Unprecedented Popularity in India

  1. Minimalistic Educational Rules:  Chess is widely used in schools and educational programs to teach critical thinking, patience, and problem-solving. Freestyle chess offers little in this context. Since players rely on machines for the heavy lifting, the learning curve becomes shallow. Children and beginners don’t learn how to build strategies or understand positions—they merely learn how to consult an engine. For a world that values cognitive growth and intellectual property, this is a dead end.

  1. Undermining Human Interference:  Tournaments If freestyle chess were to grow in popularity, it could cannibalize interest in classical or rapid formats. This would be a loss for the chess world, as it shifts attention from human excellence to digital dominance. This risks pushing away traditional audiences and sponsors who are drawn to the human aspect of the game.

  1. Dismantled Ecosystem:  Freestyle tournaments are often dependent on platforms, tools, and a niche set of followers. They don’t have the infrastructural or institutional backing that classical formats enjoy. As soon as the hosting platform goes down or top players lose interest, the ecosystem collapses. Unlike FIDE-rated events or national championships, freestyle lacks continuity and community. In a world that values stability and organic growth, this fragility is a fatal flaw.

  1. Philosophical Mismanagement in Freestyle Chess:  With a Plagiarism-Free Culture Lastly, and most crucially, freestyle chess represents a philosophical contradiction in a world that fights against plagiarism. When the essence of competition is built upon borrowed intelligence, the line between creativity and copying becomes blurred. If academic, professional, and artistic domains are penalized for relying too heavily on AI-generated content or copied work, why should sport—especially chess—be an exception?

My Perspective:

Overall if you look at Chess Ecosystem- Blitz and Rapid looks good however, proper ecosystem should be used so that all three style of chess can grow simultaneously.

All India Chess Federation should be given credit for all the stakeholders who have worked hard behind the scenes to make this entity extremely popular.

The policies instilled by Chess Federation have been more robust where best players in the business are competing against each other in times to come.

Several Chess academies have been operating all over India where budding players can learn the nuances of Chess to wider extent.

Chess as Sport will grow even more further as private stakeholders are involved in it and Global leagues are being organized at regular levels so that players get chance to compete against the best in the business to compete against each other for the prestigious title.
