WPL 2023 : UP Warriorz earn a hard fought victory to hand Gujarat Giants their 2nd loss in a row!

It doesn’t seem like the BCCI is organizing the Women’s Premier League for the first time ever. Women’s cricket in India has never been so exciting as every team in the WPL is producing top notch cricketing display. The inaugural season could not have a better start than this.

After the grand opening fixture between Mumbai Indians Women and Gujarat Giants where the former team earned a 143-run victory, Sunday brought a high-profile double header. Smriti Mandhana’s Royal Challengers Bangalore Women faced Meg Lanning’s Delhi Capitals Women for the first fixture in the afternoon.

The North-Indian outfit battered RCB’s bowling unit to register this season’s highest total (till now) of 223 runs enroute Meg Lanning, Shafali Verma, Jemimah Rodrigues and Marizanne Kapp’s fire power knocks and USA’s Tara Norris stunned RCB Women with the ball to win the contest by 60-runs.

In the following fixture here at the DY Patil Stadium, UP Warriorz earned a hard fought win by 3-wickets to hand Gujarat Giants their 2nd WPL loss in a row.

Gujarat suffered a massive jolt in their season opener against MI itself as Captain Beth Mooney got injured and the Aussie did not feature in today’s loss with Sneh Rana filling the captaincy spot. It was GG who won the toss and batted first.

Their batting line-up performed somewhat better than the last match but they could have expected more. A total of 169 is what they gave UP Warriorz to chase through Sabbineni Meghana (24), Sophia Dunkley (13), Harleen Deol’s 46 alongside Ashleigh Gardner’s 25 and Dayalan Hemalatha’s 21.

But it did not prove to be safe enough as Alyssa Healy’s side won the match by 3-wickets and a ball to spare. After a shaky start, UP Warriorz got on track thanks to Kiran Navgire and Grace Harris’s match winning knocks of 53 and 59. But it also took Sophie Eccelstone to smack a quickfire 22 off 12 deliveries to help UP Warriorz begin their WPL Campaign on a high.
