WPL 2023 : All Hype and No Results! Will RCB Women register their first victory of the tournament tonight?

WPL 2023 All Hype and No Results! Will RCB Women register their first victory of the tournament tonight

If there was any team after the first ever WPL auction which was being favoured to become the inaugural champions then it was Royal Challengers Bangalore Women. On paper and as everyone might have predicted, RCB Women are one of the (if the not the) strongest sides in Women’s Premier League 2023 but their campaign graph suggests otherwise.

Just like All Work no play, RCB Women are – All hype and No results. They had a awful start to their campaign despite being a team which is capable of intimidating oppositions with the kind of names they have. Their owners carried out the initial task perfectly well but on the field, the team has lacked consistency and also haven’t done anything to intimidate oppositions.

They have no shortage of big names, both International as well as domestic. Smriti Mandhana, Ellyse Perry, Heather Knight, Richa Ghosh, Sophie Devine, Mehan Schutt among others. Are they not capable of winning matches? Well it has exactly been the case.

RCB board as well their fans would love to look away from the WPL points table. The South Indian outfit is bottom of the table without a win and their net run rate (look away) -2.263.

Their season opener against Delhi Capitals Women is something they would like to forget. Smriti Mandhana’s decision of bowling first saw Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma amass a partnership of 162 runs and RCB could only send 2 DC batters back to the pavilion and Mandhana’s side received a mammoth total of 224 runs to chase.

After a decent start through Mandhana and Sophie Devine, RCB Women’s batting order was blown away like a house of cards. One by one everyone was sent back to the pavilion as Tara Norris’ Fifer saw RCB Women fall short by 60 runs for the win.

Their 2nd loss against Mumbai Indians Women might have hurt them a lot. This time after winning the toss, Mandhana and co were folded for just 155 runs with no batter even crossing a 30-run mark. MI Women’s was unbelievable as they chased down the total within the 15th over through a Hayley Matthews storm (77 of 38) and Nat Sciver’s 55 off 29.

RCB Women’s third loss however was a close one. While chasing a target of 201, they fell short by just 11 runs and despite once again a good start they failed to capitalize. Today against UP Warriorz they have a must win game in hand. A loss today will virtually kick them out of play-off race and leave them in a space no one would have ever thought.

Their main problem has been their bowling which has lacked threat and hasn’t been a wicket-taking unit either. Their middle order also needs to readjusted because their current combination has been extremely poor. Last but not the least, RCB Women need Ellyse Perry – the Aussie legend to click as it is now or never.
