Jose Mourinho, involved in a bizarre exchange with a journalist who asked him to ‘cheer up’ after the Tottenham‘s Champions League exit to RB Leipzig. Following Tuesday night’s 3-0 defeat in Germany, the Spurs manager had just completed his post-match press conference, which sealed their exit from the last-16 4-0 on aggregate.

As Mourinho stood up to leave the room, by saying ‘bye guys’ to the media present there, he was approached by a journalist who was wearing glasses and a blue coat seated on the front row.

The journalist who appeared to have been filming the whole of Mourinho’s reaction on his phone, says: ‘Cheer up, it’s going to be alright. Cheer up, it’s gonna be okay.’

Mourinho had responded by sayingwhat?’ to which the man, who spoke with an English accent, repeats: ‘It’s gonna be okay, cheer up.’

The Spurs boss who again had to saywhat?’ as he was started to gently been guided away by the club’s head of communications Simon Felstein.

With Mourinho still staring at him, the journalist answered one more time with ‘the season is gonna be okay’.

Mourinho went yeah’ before leaving the room as the journalist walks off.

Filming the exchange at the end of a press conference is highly unusual though it is not entirely certain if the journalist was trying to get an angry reaction from Mourinho. The Spurs are presently eighth in the Premier League with nine matches of the season to play and are seven points off the Champions League places.

The beleaguered Spurs side face an uphill struggle to get back into Europe’s elite competition again next season, Mourinho admitted that during the press conference. The manger of Spurs’ said:

‘With the squad we have at the moment it is going to be very, very difficult,’

Our problems are not going to disappear tomorrow.

Every team in the world would struggle with five or six of their most important players missing. It’s as simple as that.

So that’s a big problem. I know our team will automatically improve next season with these players back but we know we have to improve in other areas.

I will not tell you exactly. But the first and second goals we conceded I saw the mistakes and I saw why we made them and why their defenders were dominant.

We have problems and they don’t end with the injuries but no team in the world can cope with such injuries for such a long time.

‘Mentally the players try to renew their motivations and they will give everything next time but not easy for them.’

Mourinho accepted that the German outfit RB Leipzig were the better team that night and they deserved to qualify for the next round of UEFA Champions League 2019-20. The Portuguese tactician opined:

Physicality, intensity, rhythm, counter-attack and were winning duels at the back, they are a really strong team at the top of their condition with their best players and a bench full of quality against a team in trouble.
