Manchester United pay homage to club legend Sir Bobby Charlton with first UCL win this season
Two Manchester United players who’ve faced substantial criticism this season emerged as heroes on Tuesday, securing a pivotal 1-0 victory over FC Copenhagen in the UEFA Champions League group stages. This win revitalized Manchester United’s chances of progressing in the tournament.
During the first match at Old Trafford following the passing of Bobby Charlton, discontent among fans was palpable at halftime, as the team struggled to capitalize on the emotions stirred by Charlton’s memory and were unable to gain an advantage against the Danish underdogs.

However, the mood shifted when Harry Maguire, often under fire, connected with a header in the 72nd minute from a cross delivered by substitute Christian Eriksen. Another player under scrutiny, Andre Onana, preserved the win with a crucial penalty save, denying Jordan Larsson in the seventh minute of stoppage time.
This was a significant turning point for both Maguire and Onana. Maguire’s United career seemed on the brink when he lost the captaincy during the offseason and was linked with a possible move to West Ham.

However, he stayed on, regained his place in the starting lineup, and now appears to be back in the good graces of manager Erik ten Hag. As for Onana, who was brought in to influence United’s style of play with his distribution from the back, this game represented one of his finest performances.
Notably, he made a penalty save after Scott McTominay’s foul on Mohamed Elyounoussi and an exceptional diving stop to deny Lukas Lerager’s powerful shot in the 50th minute.

The evening began and concluded with chants of “There’s only one Bobby Charlton” resonating around Old Trafford as a tribute to the English World Cup winner and Manchester United’s most revered player. Pre-match ceremonies included a wreath-laying by Ten Hag and a minute’s silence, acknowledging Charlton’s immense legacy at the club.
Up next Manchester United will take on cross town rivals Manchester City later this week on Sunday in front of home supporters at Old Traffrd.
