Unpleasant Start for West Indies in Super Six

The West Indies suffered an unpleasant start to their Super Six campaign in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2023, as they were defeated by Scotland by 7 wickets. The West Indies were put in to bat first and got off to a poor start, losing their first three wickets for just 25 runs. However, Jason Holder and Romario Shepherd led a recovery, putting on a 81-run partnership for the eighth wicket.

Holder was eventually dismissed for 45 by Chris Greaves. After his fall, Romario could not add more and fell prey in the hands of Sharif, bowled by Mark Watt. The West Indies were all out at just 181 in 44th over of the game.

Despite the early loss of opener McBrider at the first ball, Scotland’s batters soon recovered from the loss as the opener Matthew Cross went on to amass solid 74 runs for his team. The one down batsman Brandon McMullen also gathered 69 runs off 106 balls with Cross to help his team win the game. McMullen was eventually dismissed by Romario Shepherd but Cross batted till the end and scored unbeaten 74.

The West Indies bowlers struggled to find a breakthrough after McMullens’ dismissal, and Scotland cruised to victory with 7 wickets and 39 balls to spare.

The defeat is a major setback for the West Indies, which will now need to win their remaining two Super Six matches to have any chance of qualifying for the World Cup.In reply, Scotland made light work of the chase, reaching their target. Matthew Cross top-scored for Scotland with unbeaten 74, while captain Richie Berrington and George Munsey scored 13 and 18 runs respectively.

The defeat leaves the West Indies in a precarious position in the Super Six standings. They need to win their remaining two games to have any chance of reaching the semi-finals.

Here are some of the key takeaways from the game:

The West Indies’ batting once again failed to fire. They have now scored less than 200 against Scotland.

Scotland’s bowling attack was excellent. They took wickets at regular intervals and never allowed the West Indies to get into a rhythm.

Matthew Cross was the star of the show for Scotland. He scored a brilliant 74 and was the only batsman to really trouble the West Indies bowlers.

The West Indies will need to improve their batting if they want to have any chance of reaching the semi-finals. They have a tough game against Pakistan coming up next, and they will need to be at their best if they want to win.
