Sunil Narine creates history, wins the Most Valuable Player Award for the third time

On Sunday, May 26, 2024, the Kolkata Knight Riders franchise witnessed glory as they won the prestigious Indian Premier League trophy for the third time in their history by beating Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final. Well, it was not the only thing that happened for the third time yesterday evening, as the West Indian all-rounder and a legend of the IPL, Sunil Narine, won the most valuable player award for the third time and became the first player ever to do so.

For his phenomenal performances throughout the season, Sunil Narine received the honors and registered his name in the history books one more time. There was no one even close to Sunil Narine in terms of impact on the teamโ€™s victories this season, and hence, he was the clear choice for the award.

Previously, Sunil Narine won this award in 2012, which was also his debut season in the Indian Premier League, and again in 2018. He played a key role in KKR lifting the title in 2012 and took them very close in 2018, but KKR was not able to cross the line back then. Let us have a look at the stats and his best performances in all three years when he has won the Most Valuable Player award.

2012

In 2012, a young West Indian player was bought by the Kolkata Knight Riders to play for them in the IPL, and he showed right away why he was given such a hefty amount. He took 24 wickets in 15 matches and was the best spinner by a margin. Narine had an economy rate of less than six runs per over and played a huge part in winning his team the coveted IPL trophy.

2018

The next time Narine won this award, it was not just on the basis of his bowling but his batting as well. He scored 357 runs in 16 innings while opening the batting at an impressive strike rate of 190 and took 17 wickets in as many innings.
