Total Chess World Championship Tour: Everything You Need to Know About FIDE’s New Format

The chess world is about to see a big change. FIDE, the main organization that controls world chess, has officially approved a brand new championship called the “Total Chess World Championship Tour”. Norway Chess, the famous tournament organizer from Stavanger, will run this new tour starting in 2027. The main goal is simple but exciting – to find the “Total Chess Player” who can play well in all three rated formats of chess.

What is the Total Chess World Championship Tour

The Total Chess World Championship Tour is a completely new type of chess championship that will test players across three different time formats. These formats are Fast Classical, Rapid, and Blitz chess. Instead of being just one tournament, the Total Chess World Championship Tour will be a series of four tournaments held in different cities around the world each year.

The Total Chess World Championship Tour will have a big prize pool. The first three tournaments will each have 750,000 dollars in prize money. The fourth tournament, which is the final event where the champion is crowned, will have 450,000 dollars. In total, the Total Chess World Championship Tour will have at least 2.7 million dollars in prize money every year.

When Does the Total Chess World Championship Tour Start

The Total Chess World Championship Tour will not start immediately. First, there will be a pilot tournament in autumn 2026. This pilot event will test the new format and help the organizers see what works and what needs to be changed. After the pilot tournament is finished, the full Total Chess World Championship Tour will officially begin in the first

Understanding Fast Classical Chess Format

One of the most interesting parts of the Total Chess World Championship Tour is the Fast Classical format. This is different from normal classical chess, which usually takes four to six hours for one game. In the Total Chess World Championship Tour, Fast Classical games will use a time control of 45 minutes plus 30 seconds added after each move.

This Fast Classical format is much faster than traditional classical chess, but it is still slow enough to allow deep thinking and planning. The important thing is that FIDE has decided to count Fast Classical games as classical chess for rating purposes. This means players will get classical rating points from these games, not rapid rating points.

FIDE actually started a pilot project in September 2025 to test this Fast Classical time control. Three tournaments played with 45 minutes plus 30 second increment to see if this format works well. The Women’s World Team Championship in November 2025 also used this time control as part of the test. The results from these tests will help the Total Chess World Championship Tour use the best possible format.

How Many Players Will Compete in Total Chess World Championship Tour

Each event in the Total Chess World Championship Tour will have 24 players. These 24 players will not all be selected in the same way. Madland explained that there will be different qualification methods. Some spots will go to the highest-rated players in the world – maybe 10, 15, or 16 players based on their FIDE ratings.

Other spots in the Total Chess World Championship Tour will go to players who win other tournaments. For example, the winners of the World Rapid Championship and World Blitz Championship will automatically get places in the Total Chess World Championship Tour. Players might also qualify through the FIDE circuit system or other important tournaments.

The Total Chess World Championship Tour will also guarantee regional representation. At least two players from the host country will be included in each event. This means if the Total Chess World Championship Tour comes to India, at least two Indian players will compete. If it goes to Norway, at least two Norwegian players will play. This rule helps local fans connect with the tournament and gives chances to strong local players.

Format and Structure of Total Chess World Championship Tour

The Total Chess World Championship Tour will use a group stage format followed by knockout rounds. Before each tournament starts, there will be a draw ceremony. Players will be divided into seeding pots based on their ratings. The top four rated players will go in Seeding Pot 1, players ranked 5 to 8 will go in Seeding Pot 2, and so on.

This seeding system will make sure that each group has similar strength. The draw will happen one day before the tournament begins, which will create excitement among fans who want to see which players will face each other. Every player will play the same number of games in the group stage. The number one player in each group will play against number one players from other groups, number two will play number two, and so on.

One special feature of the Total Chess World Championship Tour is that the player list can change between locations. Some players might leave after one tournament, and new players can join for the next event. This means someone who does not qualify for the first event might still get a chance to play in the second or third event of the Total Chess World Championship Tour.

Link to FIDE Candidates Tournament

The Total Chess World Championship Tour will also serve as a qualification path for the FIDE Candidates Tournament. According to reports, two players from the Total Chess World Championship Tour will qualify for the Candidates. This is very important because the Candidates Tournament decides who will challenge for the World Chess Championship.

This connection makes the Total Chess World Championship Tour even more valuable for top players. Not only can they win prize money and become the FIDE World Combined Champion, but they can also earn a spot in the Candidates Tournament. This gives players a strong reason to take the Total Chess World Championship Tour seriously and play in as many events as possible.

What Happens to the Original Norway Chess Tournament

Many chess fans have been asking if the Total Chess World Championship Tour will replace the traditional Norway Chess tournament that happens every year in Stavanger. Madland gave a clear answer about this question. In 2026, the traditional Norway Chess tournament will happen as usual in May and June.

The 2026 Norway Chess will have both a men’s tournament and a women’s tournament, and both will offer equal prize money. This is important because Norway Chess has always been known for treating men’s and women’s chess equally. Each tournament has a prize fund of 1,690,000 Norwegian kroner, which is shared equally between the men’s and women’s events.

However, Madland said that plans for 2027 and beyond are not confirmed yet. The organizers will need to look at the international chess calendar and see when top players are available. He made it clear that they love Norway Chess and hope to continue it if possible, but the details for 2027 are still being worked out. The traditional Norway Chess tournament is still developing and evolving.

Women’s Chess and Total Chess World Championship Tour

One question that has come up a lot is about women players in the Total Chess World Championship Tour. Currently, the Total Chess World Championship Tour does not have a separate women’s edition. This has surprised some people because Norway Chess has always supported women’s chess with equal prize money.

Benedicte Westre Skog, who is the COO (Chief Operating Officer) of Norway Chess and also the COO of the Total Chess World Championship Tour, and Madland both addressed this issue. They said that women who can qualify for the Total Chess World Championship Tour through rating or tournament wins are absolutely welcome to play. The qualification is open to everyone who meets the requirements.

However, they also made it clear that the traditional separate women’s tournament will continue. In 2026, there will be a Norway Chess Women’s tournament with equal prize money, just like previous years. For the future, Madland said they want to create a similar Total Chess World Championship Tour system for women. But for now, at the beginning, they need to focus on launching the first version successfully.

Why Freestyle Chess is Not Included

Many chess fans expected Freestyle Chess to be part of the Total Chess World Championship Tour. Freestyle Chess, also known as Chess960 or Fischer Random Chess, has become very popular recently. In this format, the starting position of the pieces is randomized instead of always being the same. This removes the advantage of memorizing opening moves and makes players rely more on pure chess skill and creativity.

Magnus Carlsen, the world’s top player, has been actively promoting Freestyle Chess. He co-organized the Freestyle Chess G.O.A.T. Challenge in 2024 and won it. In 2025, the event expanded into the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour with bigger prize funds. Carlsen has said he loves Freestyle Chess and finds it more enjoyable than regular chess.

So why is Freestyle Chess not part of the Total Chess World Championship Tour? Madland gave a very clear explanation. He said that the Total Chess World Championship Tour will always focus on rated formats. Freestyle Chess does not count for official FIDE ratings. It has its own separate rating system that was created by the Freestyle Chess organizers.

Skog added that Freestyle Chess already has its own tour with its own events. She said there is room for both the Freestyle Chess tour and the Total Chess World Championship Tour in the chess world. The Total Chess World Championship Tour is specifically about testing players in formats that are part of the official FIDE ecosystem.

Interestingly, Magnus Carlsen himself has praised the Total Chess World Championship Tour. He called it “a well-thought-out step to further develop chess”. Carlsen said that bringing multiple formats together under one title will give a better picture of each player’s complete strength. He said he is looking forward to the pilot tournament in 2026 and the first full season in 2027.

Prize Money Distribution in Total Chess World Championship Tour

The prize money structure of the Total Chess World Championship Tour is designed to reward players at every stage. Each of the first three tournaments will have 750,000 dollars available. This money will be divided among all participants based on their performance. The exact distribution has not been announced yet, but typically top finishers get larger shares.

The fourth and final tournament of the Total Chess World Championship Tour will have 450,000 dollars in prize money. This final event will only have four players – the best performers from the first three tournaments. Having only four players in the final makes it very competitive and gives each player a good chance to win the title of FIDE World Combined Champion.

On top of the regular prize money, the Total Chess World Championship Tour will also offer performance bonuses. These bonuses will go to the player with the highest point total at each individual tournament. There will also be bonuses for the player with the best overall score across the entire tour. These extra bonuses give players more reasons to perform well consistently throughout the whole season.

If the pilot is successful, the full Total Chess World Championship Tour will begin in early 2027. This will add a major new element to the international chess calendar. Players will need to plan their schedules around the four Total Chess World Championship Tour events while also preparing for traditional championships and other important tournaments.
