The ICC T20 World Cup is one of the biggest events in the world of cricket. Every few years, the best teams from around the globe come together to play this fast and exciting format of the game. While winning the trophy is the main goal for every team, there is also a special individual honor up for grabs. This honor is the “Player of the Tournament” award, also known as the MVP (Most Valuable Player) of the T20 World Cup.

2007: Shahid Afridi (Pakistan) 12 Wickets & 91 Runs

The first-ever T20 World Cup happened in 2007 in South Africa. It was a new format, and no one knew exactly what to expect. In this tournament, Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi became the first-ever T20 World Cup MVP. Shahid Afridi was known as “Boom Boom” for his big hitting, but in this tournament, he showed he was a complete all-rounder.

Shahid Afridi took 12 wickets in the 2007 edition. He was a nightmare for batsmen because he bowled fast leg-spin that was hard to read. He did not just take wickets; he also stopped runs. His bowling kept the pressure on the other teams. Along with his bowling, he scored 91 runs. These runs came at very important times when Pakistan needed quick scoring.

Throughout the T20 World Cup 2007, Afridi was the main man for Pakistan. He helped his team reach the final against India. Although Pakistan did not win the final match, Shahid Afridi was named the Player of the Tournament. His performance set the standard for what an MVP should look like.

2009: Tillakaratne Dilshan (Sri Lanka) 317 Runs

The second T20 World Cup took place in England in 2009. This time, the T20 World Cup MVP was a batsman from Sri Lanka, Tillakaratne Dilshan. Dilshan was in the form of his life during this tournament. He scored a massive 317 runs, which was a very high number for a T20 tournament at that time.

Tillakaratne Dilshan played a new kind of cricket. He invented a shot called the “Dilscoop.” In this shot, he would go down on one knee and hit the ball over the wicketkeeper’s head. This shot became famous all over the world. It was very hard for bowlers to stop him because he could hit the ball to all parts of the ground. His batting was the main reason Sri Lanka reached the final of the 2009 T20 World Cup.

In the semi-final against the West Indies, Dilshan played a magical innings. He scored 96 runs and carried his bat through the innings. He did not get out. This innings is still remembered as one of the best in T20 World Cup history.

2010: Kevin Pietersen (England) 248 Runs

In 2010, the T20 World Cup moved to the West Indies. The winner of the T20 World Cup MVP award this year was England’s Kevin Pietersen. This was a historic tournament for England because they won their first-ever ICC trophy. Kevin Pietersen was the hero of this victory.

Kevin Pietersen scored 248 runs in the tournament. He was a tall and strong batsman who could hit big sixes. In the Caribbean, the pitches were sometimes slow, but Pietersen played beautifully. He attacked the fast bowlers and played the spinners with ease. His average and strike rate were both very high. He was the backbone of England’s batting lineup.

In the final against Australia, England had to chase a target to win the cup. Kevin Pietersen came to the crease and played with great confidence. He hit the ball hard and found the gaps easily. His partnership with other batters made sure England won the match comfortably. Being named the Player of the Tournament was a great achievement for him. He was the main reason England lifted the trophy.

The 2012 T20 World Cup was held in Sri Lanka. The T20 World Cup MVP for this edition was Australia’s Shane Watson. His performance in this tournament is considered one of the greatest all-round shows in cricket history. Shane Watson did everything. He opened the batting and opened the bowling.

According to the records, Shane Watson scored 244 runs and took 11 wickets. This is a very rare achievement. Usually, a player is good at one thing, but Watson was the best at both. For several matches in a row, he was named the Man of the Match. He would score a fifty in the first innings and then take three or four wickets in the second innings. He carried the Australian team on his shoulders almost single-handedly.

Shane Watson hit many sixes in the tournament. His power was unmatched. As a bowler, he was clever and used the slow conditions in Sri Lanka to his advantage. Even though Australia did not win the tournament, there was no doubt that Shane Watson was the Player of the Tournament.

In almost every match, he scored a half-century. He guided India to the final with his consistent batting. His average was very high because he remained not out in many innings.

In the semi-final against South Africa, India had to chase a big score. Virat Kohli played one of the best innings of his life. He calculated the chase perfectly and hit the winning runs. He made batting look very easy. Even though India lost the final to Sri Lanka, Virat Kohli was the clear choice for the Player of the Tournament.

The 2022 T20 World Cup was held in Australia. This time, a bowler won the T20 World Cup MVP award. It was England’s young all-rounder, Sam Curran. Sam Curran was brilliant with the ball throughout the tournament. He took 13 wickets, which was a great achievement for a pace bowler in T20 cricket.

Sam Curran was used as a “death bowler” by his captain. This means he bowled the final overs of the innings when batters try to hit sixes. Curran used his skills brilliantly. He bowled yorkers and slower balls that confused the batsmen. He took wickets at crucial times to break partnerships.

In the final match against Pakistan, Sam Curran was the star. He bowled 4 overs and gave away very few runs while taking 3 important wickets. His bowling stopped Pakistan from scoring a big total. England won the match and the World Cup. Sam Curran was named the Player of the Match in the final and also the Player of the Tournament.

The most recent edition, the T20 World Cup 2024, was co-hosted by the USA and the West Indies. The T20 World Cup MVP was India’s Jasprit Bumrah. What made Jasprit Bumrah’s performance special was not just the wickets, but his economy rate. He gave away very few runs in every match. Even on good batting pitches, batsmen were afraid to attack him. He bowled tight lines and lengths. Whenever the captain needed a wicket or a tight over, he called Bumrah.

In the final against South Africa, the match was very close. But Bumrah bowled two magical overs in the end that turned the game in India’s favor. He took crucial wickets throughout the group stages and the knockouts. Being named the Player of the Tournament was a well-deserved honor for him.
