Paris Olympics 2024 : With possibly No Gold Medal for India is this worst Olympic for us?

Team India’s performance at the ongoing 2024 Olympics has been a matter of concern for sports enthusiasts across the nation. With the conclusion of several events, India has managed to secure only 5 medals so far, falling short of the 7 medals won in the last Olympics. This dip in performance highlights a pressing need to introspect and strategize on how we can elevate our athletes’ mental game to secure more podium finishes in the future.

It’s crucial that we learn from our setbacks and recognize that success in sports is not just about physical prowess but also about mental resilience. In this edition of the Olympics, there have been instances where our athletes have narrowly missed out on medals, finishing in the dreaded fourth position. These near-misses are indicative of a broader issue—our athletes’ inability to maintain composure during critical moments.

A couple of heartbreaking examples include weightlifter Mirabai Chanu and badminton player Lakshya Sen. Both athletes displayed commendable skill and determination throughout their events but fell short at the final hurdle, finishing in fourth place by the slimmest of margins. These close calls underscore the need for our athletes to develop the mental fortitude required to execute their game plans effectively under pressure.

The case of Neeraj Chopra, one of India’s brightest hopes in athletics, further emphasizes the importance of mental strength in high-stakes competitions. Despite his remarkable talent, Chopra appeared to struggle with nerves, managing only one legal throw out of six attempts. The remaining four throws were fouls, leaving him on the brink of elimination. This situation raises the question of whether our athletes could benefit from having a sports psychologist on board, especially for those who are considered strong medal contenders.

Incorporating psychological support as part of our athletes’ preparation could be a game-changer. A psychologist could work closely with them to develop techniques for managing pressure, staying focused, and maintaining confidence during the most intense moments of competition. By addressing the mental aspects of performance, we can help our athletes harness their full potential when it matters most.

As the Olympics continue, there are still opportunities for India to add to its medal tally. Fans can catch the remaining events live on Sports 18 channel or stream them on the Jio Cinema app. However, looking ahead, it is imperative that we take proactive steps to enhance the mental resilience of our athletes. Only then can we hope to consistently achieve success on the world stage and bring more glory to the nation.

This expanded version highlights the importance of mental strength and the potential role of psychological support in improving Team India’s performance.
