Indian Premier League, IPL, IPL Mega Auction

“Majority of the franchises are in favour of…” IPL Mega Auction Player Retention Details

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to have another mega auction later this year which has already sparked discussions about player retention. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly considering increasing the number of players each team can retain and seeks suggestions from franchises before the auction.

Why the Change?
Currently, teams can retain a maximum of five players – four through direct retention and one using the “Right to Match” (RTM) card during the auction. However, some franchises feel this disrupts team continuity. Franchises like Delhi Capitals, which had a strong core before the last mega-auction, struggled to rebuild afterward.

“Things are at a very nascent stage. The board is seeking recommendations to carry the league forward. Player-retention is a major factor in that. Going by the informal discussions, majority of the franchises are in favour of having a provision where they can retain about eight players before the auction,” a BCCI source said

What’s the Proposal?
According to sources, the BCCI has informally discussed increasing the retention limit to 8 players with team owners. This would allow teams to hold onto a larger portion of their core squad.

Who’s For It?
Ahead of the IPL mega auction, many franchises seem to favour this change. They believe retaining a larger core will improve team performance and foster stability. Additionally, some teams are pushing for an increase in the salary cap – from Rs 90 crore to Rs 100 crore – considering the BCCI’s recent lucrative media rights deals.

Are There Objections?
Not everyone agrees. Some franchises, particularly those that underperformed in the last season, might prefer a larger pool of players in the auction for rebuilding purposes.

“There will be some resistance because a few franchises will want a bigger pool of players in the auction to rebuild their teams. One must remember that there are 10 teams now and if the number of retentions is increased, then the ‘cream pool’ will become very small. The meeting on April 16 is likely to revolve around these talking points,” a BCCI source said.

“Some feel that it doesn’t make sense if the core of the team is broken so frequently. Franchises have identified that there should be a scope to retain the larger part of the core team. There are a couple of objections to this suggestion. Nothing specific has been discussed about the RTM or cap on overseas retentions,” the source said.

The Challenge: Balancing Continuity and Competition
Increasing retentions could lead to a smaller pool of top players available in the auction. This could potentially reduce competition and make it harder for weaker teams to build strong squads.

What’s Next?
The BCCI is set to meet with franchise owners on April 16th. Discussions about the number of player retentions, salary cap, and the “Right to Match” card are expected to be central to the meeting.

The IPL is considering a significant change to its player retention policy. While some teams believe this will improve team performance and stability, others worry it might stifle competition. The upcoming meeting between the BCCI and franchise owners will be crucial in deciding the future of player retention in the IPL.
