Let’s know about English Premier League’s first Punjabi-Sikh assistant referee Bhupinder Singh Gill

Remember the name, Bhupinder Singh Gill, the first Punjabi-Sikh referee to assistant refer a match in the English Premier League. Bhupinder Singh Gill was seen running the line at Southampton’s home field St Mary’s in their match against Nottingham Forest on Wednesday.

Football has been a part of Bhupinder’s life since childhood and much of the credit should go to his father Jarnail Singh, who developed his interest even further. Jarnail Singh was the first ever turban worn Sikh referee in the English top-flight. Bhupinder’s brother Sunny followed his father’s footsteps and Bhupinder Singh did the same.

“This has to be the proudest and most exciting moment in my refereeing journey, but I’m not getting carried away as it is just another step in the direction to where I want to get to. Hopefully, this is another moment to help inspire the next generation to sign up to a refereeing course and get into officiating.”

“My dream has always been to reach the top of the game, be a role model for future officials and encourage more people from diverse backgrounds into officiating, especially from a South Asian background just like me.”
