Liverpool hijack Manchester United target Cody Gakpo days before the January transfer window opens

English Premier League side Liverpool have beaten rivals Manchester United in the race to sign Netherlands number 9 and PSV Eindhoven forward Cody Gakpo for a deal worth more than 40 Million euros plus add-ons. The initial fee is said to around the region of 37 million euros and Gakpo is all set to be Liverpool’s first signing of 2023.

Cody Gakpo

Many believed that Manchester United were the only club from England who are leading the race to sign him but turns out Jurgen Klopp has already convinced the youngster to sign for the Merseyside. The 23-year-old was one of the brightest youngsters during the recently concluded FIFA World Cup 2022, where he was alongside Memphis Depay and Luuk De Jong in the front 3.

Gakpo became the first player in World cup history to open the scoring in his first 3 matches. He scored goals from tight angles and also contributed in the build up to every dutch attack. His arrival at Anfield will bolster the 6-time UEFA Champions League winners who are currently 6th in the Premier League standings.

Both Liverpool and PSV have reached an agreement on the proposed transfer of Cody Gakpo. The 23-year-old will undergo a medical in the next few days and is expected to sign a long term deal with the Reds. Strategically, it is a very good signing for the English outfit who are without Diogo Jota and Colombian forward Luis Diaz due to injury.

Luis Diaz

In the last winter Transfer window, Klopp insisted on signing Luis Diaz and the player made an instant impact as soon as he arrived. While Diaz will not return for the remainder of the season, Gakpo will look to have a similar impact. His stats this season with PSV has been simply sensational.

Gakpo is the first player in Europe’s top 7 divisions to have 10+ goals and assists across all competitions. He is also the first player ⁣in Europe’s top 7 divisions to be directly involved in 30+ goals in all competitions. He will form a lethal attacking front alongside Mohammed Salah and Darwin Nunez as the Reds will look to win the Premier League as well the UCL.

Another reason why Liverpool might have signed Gakpo is summer signing Darwin Nunez’s inconsistent form. The Uruguayan forward has a lot of potential but he still needs time to adapt with Klopp’s style of play and intensity the German demands.

Gakpo on the other hand is a versatile forward who can convert chances into goals even from areas other forwards can’t. His numbers this season for PSV suggests that he can aid in the build up for Liverpool’s counter attacks. In 14 top-flight appearances, the Dutchman has found the back of the net 9 times and registered 14 assists.

The pacy left-sided forward is efficient in terms of work rate and he stands 6 foot 3, which again is a plus point for a forward. Gakpo was subject of transfer for a number of clubs before the World cup itself and post World cup, Liverpool have raided the long time Manchester United target.

In total, Cody Gakpo has 55 goals and 50 assists in 159 outings for PSV Eindhoven and he is all set to become the latest Dutchman to arrive in the English Premier League. Will he be a good signing for the 2019/2020 Premier League champions?
