liverpool fansLiverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is all set to meet Gerry Marsden for the first time and as per reports, a Liver Bird is set to bring the two personalities together.

The Reds manager has been at Anfield for more than four years but is yet to meet the singing star.

However, this is set to change when the Liverpool gaffer will shake hands with the iconic figure this week.youll-never-walk-alone-gary-marsden

Gerry, whose anthem “You’ll Never Walk Alone” is sung at every game by fans, said:

“I get to the home games whenever I can but since retiring from international touring I have been spending more time in Spain.

“The meeting simply never happened but I’m looking forward to shaking the great man’s hand, presenting him with a Spirit of Liverpool Liver Bird and declaring him an ‘Adopted Scouser’.”

This meeting has been arranged by Liver Birds Inc who produce modern versions of the Liver Bird named The Spirit of Liverpool.

Arthur Johnson, who happens to be a former Liverpool Echo journalist and is a partner in the business, explained:jurgen-kloop-on-fa-cup

“I’ve known Gerry for a long time. About 30 years ago I arranged to fly to Australia with him and the late Brian Hall, formerly of Liverpool FC, and we founded Scousers Down Under in a town named Liverpool which is not far from Sydney.

“Gerry’s not only an MBE but he’s also a Freeman of the City of Liverpool so he certainly has the right to give Jurgen the title of Adopted Scouser!

“A few weeks ago Gerry mentioned to me in passing that he had never actually met the Liverpool manager so I contacted the ECHO’s Dave Prentice and we’ve managed to put this right.”

At the age of 77, Gerry is still performing and is all set for a sell-out in the Merseybeat Legends concert at the Philarmonic on Monday, February 17.

His iconic anthem “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” reached number one in November 1963 and was quickly adopted by the Kop.

The anthem was originally performed in the musical Carousel and was the number one in various charts for Gerry and the Pacemakers and has since then also been synonymous with Liverpool FC.

Gerry has performed it numerous times at Anfield, and poignantly at Wembley before the 1989 FA Cup final in the wake of the Hillsborough tragedy.

“I sung it for the first time at Wembley in the 1989 FA Cup final and even the Blues were singing it. That was magic – a big moment in my life,” he said.
