Kane Williamson reveals why he has a plastic protector with Dale Steyn’s signature as memorabilia at home

A broken plastic ‘protector’ with Dale Steyn’s signature is among the cricket memorabilia on display at Kane Williamson’s house in Tauranga.
The Kiwi captain recalled the day from 2012 when a very quick delivery from the South African fast bowler cracked his box. Williamson scored 102 not out to save a draw for his side against Steyn and Morne Morkel, while also enduring several nasty hits to the body from the two pacers.

“I was quite a bit younger and facing some of those guys for the first time and Dale was running in and bowling downwind at the Basin and skidded a ball in and it broke my box in half,” Williamson told Melbourne’s Herald Sun.
“It hurt… it put me on my bum for a bit. I just said, ‘Change the box’ and it certainly woke me up a bit. It was a massive wake-me-up. In some ways, it was quite helpful. Dale – fierce competitor, great fella and he broke my box.”
“We caught up with them after the game and I said, ‘Do you mind signing my box? He loved it, he signed it with a smiley face. It’s not something you want done on a regular basis, a fast bowler signing your box, that’s for sure.”
Williamson posted a photo of the box – which is on display at his parents’ house – on Instagram in August when Steyn confirmed his retirement from Test cricket.
“The box @dalesteyn cracked back in 2013 – OUCH! Kind of him to sign it after the match though ? Congratulations on an incredible Test career mate #steyn #alwayswearabox,” he captioned the photo.
Steyn is undoubtedly one of the finest ever fast bowlers in Test cricket. 93 Tests – 439 wickets – average of 22.95 – 27 four-wicket hauls – 25 five-wicket hauls – five 10-wicket hauls –that was the kind of career the quick enjoyed and even with age not by his side, he is still ruling the wicket-takers chart in the Mzansi Super League 2019.
