Is Gurpreet Singh Sandhu going to be a good captain?
As the Blue Tigers gear up for a new chapter, all eyes are on Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, the first-choice goalkeeper of the Indian football team. He was recently appointed as the Indian team captain following the retirement of dependable and legendary Sunil Chhetri from international football. This drastic change in leadership has sparked discussions across the nation, with many questioning whether Sandhu is the correct choice to lead the promising squad.
Born in Mohali, Punjab, Gurpreet Singh Sandhu has made a significant impact on Indian football over the years. Sandhu made his debut with the senior national team in 2013, standing tall at 6’6 . Sandhu has carved a niche for himself as an exceptional shot-stopper, earning praise for his agility, commanding presence, and exceptional reflexes between the goalposts.

With 72 caps to his name, and being the longest-serving player in the Indian national team after Chhetri’s retirement, he has also shown the ability to lead as he captained Bengaluru FC in the Indian Super League, steering the team towards multiple titles. In fact, on more than one occasion Gurpreet has led the Indian team as well, especially when Chhetri was absent due to injuries or personal reasons. As far as the Indian team is concerned, Igor Stimac even declared that “It [captain armband] was a no-brainer to hand it to Gurpreet”.
Gurpreet Sandhu’s skill at football is indisputable though, as he has been part of multiple title-winning Indian teams. He has won four South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Championships, two Intercontinental Cups, and one tri-nation series, which was held last year. Moreover, he was awarded the Arjuna Award in 2019, along with winning the ISL Golden Gloves in the 2018-19 and 2019-20 campaigns.
With the responsibility of not only performing on-field but also leading the national team, the spotlight now turns to Sandhu’s aptitude for captaincy. Sandhu’s humility, dedication to the sports and commitment to the team makes him a promising candidate for the captain’s armband as well as a role model for aspiring footballers across the country. While some skeptics have questioned his limited experience in leading the team, many within the football fraternity have praised his professionalism, strong work ethic, and the talent for motivating those around him- a rare quality needed to become a good captain.
As the Indian team navigates through a transition phase, from Chhetri to non-Chhetri, after failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, there is one thing for certain- Sandhu’s leadership will be pivotal in strengthening the squad for future matches and ushering in a new era of Indian football. With the support of his teammates and the backing of the Indian football family, Gurpreet Singh Sandhu is set to assume the mantle of captaincy, with the aim of guiding the Indian team toward a brighter horizon, a brighter future in the international football arena.
