IPL matches hang in the balance, Sawai Man Singh Stadium sealed
Just a month before the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL), a major controversy has erupted in Jaipur. Sawai Man Singh Stadium, the home ground of Rajasthan Royals, has been sealed by the Rajasthan Sports Council (RSC) due to a financial dispute with the Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA). This sudden move has jeopardized the hosting of the upcoming IPL matches in Jaipur.

What happened?
The RSC alleges that RCA failed to meet its economic obligations, including non-payment of fees and breach of terms in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Despite several warnings, RCA allegedly failed to comply, prompting the RSC to seal the stadium, RCA premises and its academy.

Rajasthan Sports Council View
RSC secretary Sohan Ram Choudhary said several notices were sent to the RCA but no response was received. He further highlighted RCA’s alleged refusal to deposit the budget received from the Rajasthan Premier League, which similarly violates the MoU. Choudhary assured that the IPL and other scheduled matches will take place but under the guidance of the RSC.
Rajasthan Cricket Association Reply
RCA president Vaibhav Gehlot strongly criticized the permit, calling it politically motivated. He argued that the remarkable fees are old (around Rs 8 crore) and that the unexpected sealing simply before the IPL suggests a bad reason. He also highlighted the quick notice provided through the RSC, claiming it to be less than two days. Gehlot declared the RCA’s intention to seek legal advice to venture the proposal.
Effect on IPL
The sealing of the stadium has cast a shadow over the upcoming IPL season. The Sawai Man Singh Stadium is scheduled to host two important matches for Rajasthan Royals: their opening match in opposition to Lucknow Super Giants on March 24 and a clash with Delhi Capitals on March 28. While the RSC assures prosecutions will occur, the uncertainty surrounding the venue are raising concerns.
