Inter faces Milan in Sunday’s Serie A clash in the Derby della Madonnina. Can Inter win their 4th Milan derby on the spin against their local rivals?
Milan is vibrating with excitement ahead of the latest Derby della Madonnina between the city’s bitter rivals Inter and AC on Sunday evening.
Title hopefuls Inter have maintained impressive levels on consistency for the majority of the campaign under the direction of Antonio Conte, though they will need to be at their best to see off an AC Milan side on the up this weekend.
The Rossoneri come into Sunday’s derby having won five of their last six games in all competitions, and their only defeat in their last 12 fixtures overall came in their somewhat anomalous 0-5 hammering at Atalanta three days before Christmas.
Similarly, high-flying Inter have tasted defeat just once in their last 15 domestic and continental assignments, though Conte will be keen for his troops to shake off the mid-season rustiness that saw them draw three of their last four in Serie A.
That disappointing run saw Inter relinquish their lead at the summit of the standings to defending champions Juventus, though the Nerazzurri’s slight downturn in results has opened up an opportunity in the betting markets.
Inter were held to a draw in four of their last seven league home games since October, a sequence that has taken the edge off their odds to win this weekend, however, we think Conte’s charges look excellent value to secure a victory.
It’s interesting to note that AC Milan have taken more points on the road than they have done at home this term, winning 18 points away from their base compared to just 14 there.
However, Milan play as the away team on the home ground they share with Inter this weekend, putting paid to their impressive productivity on the road.
In addition, Inter’s 2-0 win against Milan earlier this season was their third straight triumph over their traditional antagonists, and the Nerazzurri are unbeaten in seven Derby della Madonnina league matches since 2016 overall.
Juventus are the only team to have beaten Inter after 22 rounds of Serie A fixtures this season, and buoyed by their excellent head-to-head record against Milan, Antonio Conte’s well drilled unit have the tactical and technical nous to see off their great rivals on Sunday.
Alongside our home win prediction, we’re tipping the hosts to run out 2-1 victors in our correct score forecast. Inter’s attacking play has been the picture of efficiency this season, but it has lacked sparkle, as evidenced by their 2.0 goals per game average in the league since August.
At the other end, Inter conceded exactly one goal in five of their last seven Serie A outings, and in keeping with that pattern, we expect Milan to register a consolation.

INT VS MIL: Best players
Inter Milan: Alessandro Bastoni
With all the headlines surrounding Conte’s raid on the Premier League – which has entailed the signings of Victor Moses, Christian Eriksen, Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez and Ashley Young this season alone – one player who has slipped under the radar is 20-year-old Bastoni.
The athletic centre-back has looked impressive whenever he’s taken to the turf this term and has even kept defensive stalwart Diego Godin out of the starting XI on the odd occasion. He looks comfortable playing in Conte’s back-three set-up, and it will certainly be interesting to see how he fares against Ibrahimovic this weekend, if he’s given the nod that is.
Key stat: Alessandro Bastoni has registered the fourth-best passes per 90 minutes ratio of any Inter Milan player in Serie A this season (64.2).
AC Milan: Zlatan Ibrahimovic
Few will be relishing this occasion more than ‘Ibra’, who has a propensity to perform in the real Hollywood fixtures. One appropriate example of this here would be his last appearance in a Derby della Madonnina, in which he bagged a brace (Inter would go on to win that match 4-2 back in 2012, though).
Since returning to Italian soil the prolific Swede has bagged two goals, but he will no doubt have marked this fixture down in his diary.
Another player who represented Milan’s two foremost clubs, Andrea Pirlo, highlighted the ‘demonic’ drive to win possessed by Ibrahimovic while previewing the Milan derby.
“Ibra is fundamental, because he raises concentration levels in the group,” he told Italian paper La Gazzetta dello Sport.
“He is a demanding perfectionist in every respect and wants everyone else to be the same. I know that from experience!
“His teammates will feel enormous focus in every training session with him, as he really makes you knuckle down. It’s true that he pins you to the wall, shouts, gets furious. I’ve known very few people like him.”
But an equally intense footballing mind will oppose Ibrahimovic designs on the Milan derby, according to Pirlo, who believes his old Juventus coach shares his win-at-all-costs attitude.
He added: “Conte forces you to give your best at all times, more than you even thought you had. He is obsessed with victory, so when he loses, he becomes a demon. You daren’t speak to him.
“Conte is the best coach I ever worked with, every day he showed us 40-50 minute video sessions. It’s because of him that I started considering the idea of becoming a coach myself.”
Key stat: In his previous four matches against Inter Milan, Ibrahimovic has netted four goals.
