The nation’s field hockey history at the Asian Games has been largely attributed to the players’ devotion to training, their capacity to adjust to shifting conditions, and their passion for proudly representing their country.


The Indian men’s and women’s teams have dominated the field hockey events at the Asian Games from the very beginning. India has the maximum number of medals (21) among all the other countries that take part in this event at the Asian Games, collectively in both men’s and women’s categories.

The men’s team started the journey well, winning two consecutive silver medals in the first two editions (1958 and 1962). They won a gold medal in 1966 and then won another four consecutive silver medals (1970, 1974, 1978, and 1982).

The men’s team won a bronze medal in 1986 and then two more consecutive silver medals in 1990 and 1994. 1998 was again a golden year for the Indian team. In 2002, they again won a silver medal, whereas 2006 was medal-less.

The team won a bronze in 2010, a gold in 2014, and a bronze again in 2018, which was the latest edition. The men’s team has won a total of 15 medals in this event at the Asian Games (3 gold, 9 silver, and 3 bronze).

The women started their journey with a gold medal in 1982. They won a bronze in 1986 and a silver in 1998. 2006 and 2014 were the years in which the women’s team won a bronze medal. In the latest edition, in 2018, the team won a silver medal at the Asian Games.
