ICC Rankings : India leapfrog to the #1 spot on all Three formats with just a month left for the WTC Final!

After surpassing Australia in the yearly rankings update, Team India, led by Rohit Sharma, has been named the brand-new No. 1 side in the ICC Men’s Test Rankings. Prior to next month’s ICC World Test Championship 2023 Final, India overtook Australia, led by Pat Cummins, following 15 months at the peak of the men’s Test Rankings.

The rivalry between Australia and India in Test cricket has grown to be one of the most thrilling in recent memory, and the rankings switch nicely positions the WTC 2023 Final with the two teams prepared to pen a further chapter at the “Ultimate Test” on June 7 at The Oval in London.

Australia had 122 points, three more than India (119), who came in second place before the annual rankings update. The annual rankings take into account all seasons that have been released since May 2020, with seasons that have been released before May 2022 counted at 50% and all seasons that have been released after that weighted at 100%.

Australia’s home series victories over Pakistan (2-0) and New Zealand (3-0) in 2019–20 were therefore disregarded, while their 4-0 victory over England in 202–22 has a weighted that is now halved. Australia’s ranking fell from 121 to 116 as a result.

India moved up two places, from 119 to 121, as a result of the 2-0 loss they suffered to New Zealand in the 2019–20 season not being taken into account for the rankings.

Australia defeated England 4-0 in their own Ashes in January 2022, propelling them to the top of the Test rankings during Pat Cummins’ maiden series as captain. India had previously held the top spot in the standings until they were knocked out by South Africa 2-0 a month earlier.

India has maintained their top spot in the ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings, expanding their advantage over England in second place from six to eight points. To move up to third place, New Zealand passed South Africa and Pakistan. The biggest increases in ratings came from Hong Kong (up three spots to 18th) and the United States (up three spots to 22nd).
