SUNIL JOSHI AND HARVINDER SINGH HAVE BEEN SELECTED FOR THE FIVE-MEMBER SECTION COMMITTEE:

BCCI led Cricket Advisory Committee has appointed Sunil Joshi as the chairman of National Selection Committee on Thursday, while Harvinder Singh has also been included in the five-member selection panel.

WHO HAVE THEY REPLACED?

The new chairman of the selection committee, Sunil Joshi has replaced MSK Prasad from South Zone, while the inclusion of Harvinder Singh saw him replacing Gagan Khoda from Central Zone.

WHO APPOINTED THEM?

BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee, comprised of Madan Lal, RP Singh and Sulakshana Naik, selected Sunil Joshi and Harvinder Singh as two new members of the selection committee. It is learnt that the Committee will review the performances of the panel after one year and make recommendations accordingly.

We picked them (Joshi and Harvinder) because they were clear in their views,” Madan Lal told PTI.

We liked Sunil Joshi’s straight-forward attitude. He is experienced also (having been part of the Bangladesh support staff)”. He added.

The Cricket Advisory Committee, earlier, shortlisted five candidates from a total of 40 applicants, of which, two members with the likes of Sunil Joshi and Harvinder Singh have been finalised for the role.

WHO ARE THE EXISTING MEMBERS OF THE FIVE-MEMBER SELECTION COMMITTEE?

Jatin Paranjpe (West), Devang Gandhi (East) and Sarandeep Singh (North) are three existing members of the selection panel. The trio’s term will end on September 2020, following which three new members will be selectors from the above-mentioned zones.

Who is Sunil Joshi-the new chairman of the selection committee?

For those of you who don’t know Sunil Joshi is a former Indian cricketer who represented India in 15 test matches and 69 one-day internationals. He was a bowling all-rounder who played for Karnataka in the Ranji Trophy.

Sunil Joshi has played as many as 160 matches in first-class cricket, scoring 5129 runs and has 615 wickets to his name. 

Joshi enjoyed his best season in 1995-96 which also turned out to be a breakthrough year for him as it also helped him appear on the biggest stage. He made his Test debut in England on June 6, 1996. In the same year, he made his ODI debut against Zimbabwe.

IPL CAREER:

Interestingly, Joshi has also been a part of the inaugural season of Indian Premier League. He played for Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2008 edition of Indian Premier League. He made his IPL debut against Kolkata Knight Riders and played a total of 4 matches in his IPL career.

COACHING CAREER:

Joshi called time on his first-class cricket on 21st June 2012, followed which he became the coach of Hyderabad Cricket Team and then Jammu and Kashmir team.

Ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup 2016, Sunil Joshi became the spin bowling coach of Oman cricket team, while he also served as the head coach of Assam cricket team.

In August 2017, he handled the spin bowling consultant duties of Bangladesh Cricket team.
