Brydon Carse suspended for breaching anti-corruption code
The English cricket team suffered yet another blow on Friday as Brydon Carse was suspended for breaching the anti-corruption code. The fast bowler has been barred from any cricket-related activities for the next 3 months. Notably, the 28-year-old pacer was even bought into England’s 50-over World Cup squad last year.
The decision, in this case, was very hard to make and in view of taking into account all the circumstances of the case and some of the compelling reasons stated by the defense counsel.
Upon the completion of an anti-corruption probe, the Cricket Regulator penalised Carse with a 16-month suspension. However, 13 months has been partially lifted, leaving the three-month period of ineligibility. This means Carse will not play any cricket until August 28, 2024.

The cricket rules state that – No ‘professional participant’, which encompasses players, coaches and managers, and support staff, amongst others, is allowed to gamble on cricket matches anywhere in the world.
Brydon Carse – born in South Africa but has played for white-ball cricket for England in 17 matches. This suspension arguably disqualifies him for the rest of the English season and maybe even a Test debut. Although the last Test match of the summer against Sri Lanka may start on September 6th, selection seems almost impossible since it is only a week after his suspension is over.
Brydon Carse confirmed allegations leveled against him saying that he was sorry and took full blame for his acts as confessed to the media in a statement. He realized well that the given time period doesn’t justify his actions. He also extended his gratitude to the ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board), Durham Cricket, and the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA) for their support amid the hard time. Carse also said that he is willing to work in the following months to regain his full form for subsequent return to the field when allowed.
An ECB spokesperson reaffirmed the organization’s stand as to how dire situations are taken with regard to such breaches. Availing themselves of this opportunity, they stressed the support of the Cricket Regulator’s decision that would also take into consideration the cooperation and remorse of Carse. They agreed with them on the fact that he has grown and has matured in terms of handling responsibilities as compared to before 5 years. ECB also hoped that Carse’s example would become a learning experience for other cricketers to learn from him and avoid the same mistake.
Brydon Carse last played an international game in an ODI match against the Windies in Antigua in December 2019. This suspension must hinder his cricketing career and deny him the possibility of getting a Test this season.
