Boxing team hit the corona virus probe, stranded at the airport for 24 hours

Preparing for Olympic qualifiers in Italy has to some extent hurt the Indian contingent that was to participate in the Olympic qualifiers to be held in Amman, Jordan. Five members of the boxing team that was traveling to Jordon were stranded at Frankfurt Airport in Germany for a day due to the spread of corona virus in Italy.

It has been reported that other than the five members who are — women’s team’s chief coach Ali Qamar, Italian coach Rafael Bergamasco, boxer Pooja Rani, Mary Kom’s coach Chhote Lal Yadav, boxer Pooja Rani who was to participate in 75 kg trails and team physio Aayush were stopped at the Frankfurt airport. However, other members of the team were allowed to travel to Amman after foreign coach of the Indian team Santiago urged that it was the Indian team that was traveling to Amman for Olympic qualifiers.

It is to be noted that an eight men and 5 women pugilists were preparing for the Olympic qualifiers in Italy. Italy is at the moment in the grip of corona virus and many European nations have made a policy where they are not allowing passengers from Italy to stop at the airport and Germany is one of them.

The Indian team was traveling to Amman via Frankfurt. The team was to change flight from Frankfurt where they had to board the flight to Amman. However, the Indian contingent was stopped at the airport as they were coming from Italy. Coach Santiago then explained that it was India’s national team and was going to participate in the Olympic qualifiers. Soon the officials allowed most of the team members to travel further but the five members who were not present with the team during that time were stranded at the airport.

The members that were left behind had to undergo the entire investigation process due to which their connecting flight was missed, and they were left in lurch at the airport. However, later a Boxing Federation of India (BFI) official revealed that the members were flown to Amman the day after and all members were expected to land in Amman by late night.
