BCCI invites bids for the operation of WIPL Women's IPL teams

BCCI have reached out to some big names ahead WIPL in March

On Tuesday, BCCI invited a list of reputed entities to own the rights of teams in the WIPL expected to begin from March. The owners as always will be directly involved in the decision making of the respective teams, own and operate as well. The inaugural Women’s IPL T20 will reportedly start from March and conclude by the time Men’s IPL begins.

The BCCI on a press statement asked reputed and renowned entities to make a non-refundable payment of INR 5 Lakhs before by January 21. The Apex body of Indian cricket released the Invitations to Tender on Tuesday, which read out the eligibility criteria for Potential buyers and once it gets cleared by BCCI, they can enter the fray.

Sources have also claimed that there is no such update on who will buy but it is possible that owners of Men’s IPL teams can put it under their umbrella. BCCI are working a lot lately to improve the condition of Women’s cricket. They recently broke a norm and put female cricketers on the same wages as Men cricketers, made the (WIPL) possible and now inviting rich owners to operate the teams in WIPL.

“The detailed terms and conditions governing the tender process including eligibility requirements, process of submission of bids, proposed team’s rights and obligations, etc. are contained in the Invitation to Tender (ITT)which will be made available on receipt of payment of a non-refundable fee INR 5,00,000 plus any applicable Goods and Services Tax. – said BCCI’s Press Release

Last August, former BCCI President Sourav Ganguly indicated that WIPL could get underway from March. All the obligations and processes have already begun and the BCCI have slightly twisted the Women’s cricket schedule to accommodate WIPL. The calendar usually took place from November to April but it will finish early by February.

Sourav Ganguly said about the tournament that : “It is certainly going to happen. I strongly believe that next year i.e. 2023 will be a very good time to start a full-fledged women’s IPL which will be as big and grand a success as men’s IPL.” 

The WIPL has also come a long way from being just a one-match play-off between two teams to having Three teams and now at least more than 5 teams will look to become first champions of Women’s IPL. Jay Shah, president of BCCI recently revealed that certain IPL teams have registered their interest to run a team in inaugural WIPL.

Rajasthan Royals, Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians are three of the IPL franchises that have come forward to possibly own teams in the 5-6 team tournament.
