Todd Astle – Age, Career Info & Stats

Todd Duncan Astle born on 24th September 1986 is a New Zealand Cricketer. He plays for the national cricket team of New Zealand. He is the son of Alec Astle who was also a cricketer and played first-class cricket in the late of 1970s. He is a right-hand batsman and plays a leg break bowler. Initially, he was an opening batsman but later on gave priority to leg spin bowling, with an amazing result and became a star in the New Zealand domestic circuit.

Early Life of Todd Astle

Todd Astle was born in Palmerston North, New Zealand. He started his cricketing journey with Canterbury. Being a trained in New Zealand Academy, Todd did a great job in domestic cricket and worked his way up to the New Zealand national team. Astle got his first limelight when he completed 374 runs with partner Kieryn Ambler for Canterbury against Auckland in 2004-05.

Domestic Career

Todd named his first-class debut for Canterbury against Wellington in December 2005, in the State Championship. Realizing his strength, Todd although being an opening batsman concentrated on leg-spin and received an all-rounder role in  2009. This change gave away to his great success in Plunket Shield where he scalped 55 wickets in the next two season.

International Career

Todd Astle made his Test debut on 25th November 2012 for the Blackcaps against Sri Lanka. Along with partner Ross Taylor, he scored 55 runs in the second innings. His first wicket was also taken in the second innings by removing Prasanna Jayawardene.

He made his T20 International debut on 15th January 2016 against Pakistan. In October 2017, he was included in New Zealand ODI Squad against India, but could not play due to an injury prior to the match. Then he made his ODI debut on 20th December 2017 against West Indies. In the next year, he was included in the test squad of New Zealand in the series against England, replacing Mitchell Santner, who was at the time unable to play due to an injury. He was awarded a Central contract for the first time in May 2018, Where was one of twenty players for the 2018-19 season by New Zealand cricket team.
