Sri-Lanka Head Coach Chris Silverwood optimistic about Dasun Shanaka getting an IPL contract

Sri-Lanka head coach Chris Silverwood expressed his optimism about Captain Dasun Shanaka’s chances of landing an IPL contract after he smacked a Century during Sri-Lanka’s 67 run loss to India.

Shanaka stood strong in the crease till the final ball of the second innings but failed to get his side over the victory line.

Though winning and losing is a part of the game, credits must go to Shanaka who showed a strong character and will to fight back until the end. The Lankan Skipper has been developing into a huge asset for them as his performances have been getting better with time.

He came onto bat at number 6 when Sri-Lanka were 161/5 and started his counter-attacking cricket and took on the Indian bowling line-up. Other than him Pathum Nissanka was Sri-Lanka’s best batsman as the right-handed opener amassed 72 runs.

But the middle order collapsed dramatically and by the ending moments, India took the match far away from Lanka’s reach. Still the talk of the team was Dasun Shanaka’s intent and never give up attitude which can probably earn him an IPL contract according to his head coach.

During the Mini IPL Auction on December 23rd, Dasun Shanaka had a base price of 50 Lakhs INR but he went unsold as the franchise owners must have been unsure about his efficiency. But he read the pitch very last night and played an aggressive inning of 108 with 12 4’s and 3 6’s.

“I think he (Shanaka) has done himself a world of good. He has put himself in the marketplace now. I am sure the (IPL) franchises will be looking at him and seeing how dynamic a cricketer he is. He is a great striker of the ball, so hopefully, he will get an opportunity.” – said Chris Silverwood.

At times it seems as if Sri-Lanka rely too much upon his form and it was pretty evident last night. Pathum Nissanka and Dhananjay Da Silva are also two bright prospects for them and if they groom them properly, Sri-Lanka could become a firepower once again.

Is Sri-Lankan cricket on their way back?
