Rodney Redmond - Age, Career Info & Stats

Rodney Ernest Redmond was an all-rounder cricketer who had a very brief, albeit still great, international career representing the New Zealand national colors in both Test and ODI matches. Born in 1944 near Whangarei, Redmond was a child prodigy from his early teenage days, already showing the signs of his signature aggressive batting with the powerful front-footing. He had gone on to play over 50 first-class cricket matches and 10 A-list matches as an all-rounder.

In the bowling department, his style could be categorized as that of a slow left-armed orthodox bowler. He was also quite a decent fielder, with a total of 31 catches taken in his first-class career, and 5 additional catches in the ten A-listers that he played. In the 100 first-class innings he played as a batsman, he scored 3134 runs at a 33.69 average, and his highest innings score clocks in at 141 not out and 70 in first class and A-list cricket.

Unfortunately, his international career was rather restricted, and he played as a One-Test wonder into the NZ folds. His debut and only international Test match were in a crucial one, where he was brought in deep into a home tour against Pakistan for the third Test match at Christchurch in 1972, where he put out phenomenal performances in both innings, bagging 107 and 56 respectively. Due to this, he was a de facto Sureshot choice for the 1973 England tour as well, but his aging, his troubles in coming to terms with his new contact lenses, as well as his falling performance cast his appearance in a shroud of doubt. Ultimately, he did not get to play in another Test match on the international level, as he had only scored 3 runs in the two international ODI matches in that tour.

At present, Rodney lives in Perth, Australia, but his son, AJ Redmond, plays in the first-class and international level at and for New Zealand.
