Ostrava Golden Spike, Neeraj Chopra, Paris Olympics 2024

Neeraj Chopra pulls out of Ostrava Golden Spike as precaution for Paris Olympics 2024

Neeraj Chopra, India’s star javelin thrower and Olympic gold medalist, will not be competing in the upcoming Ostrava Golden Spike 2024 athletics meet scheduled for May 28th in the Czech Republic. This news comes after initial reports suggested Chopra withdrew due to a muscle injury. However, Chopra himself has clarified the situation.

On May 26th, Neeraj Chopra took to social media to explain his decision. “Hello everyone! Following a recent throwing session, I decided not to compete in Ostrava as I felt something in my adductor,” he wrote. “I have had problems with it in the past and pushing it at this stage can lead to injury,” he added.

While initial reports suggested an injury, Chopra emphasized a cautious approach. “Just to clarify, I am not injured but I don’t want to take any risks during the Olympic year, so had to take this decision,” he added. “Once I feel it’s fully recovered, I will get back to competitions. Thank you for your support.”

This decision highlights Chopra’s focus on the upcoming Paris Olympics 2024, where he will be aiming to defend his gold medal. By prioritizing his health and avoiding potential aggravation of a minor issue, he is taking a calculated step towards peak performance in a few months.

Neeraj Chopra had a strong start to 2024 season

Despite missing the Ostrava Golden Spike, Neeraj Chopra has had a fantastic start to the 2024 season. He began with a silver medal throw of an impressive 88.36 meters at the Doha Diamond League on May 10th. This was followed by a gold medal win in the Federation Cup on May 15th with a throw of 82.27 meters, pushing teammate DP Manu to second place.

The 82.27-meter throw might suggest Chopra is still regaining his peak form after the off-season. However, starting the season with a strong performance at Doha and a win at the Federation Cup showcases his overall preparedness.

Ostrava Golden Spike Finds Replacement

The organizers of the Ostrava Golden Spike were quick to find a replacement for Neeraj Chopra. European champion Julian Weber from Germany, who recently threw an impressive 88.37 meters, will now be competing in the event.
