Manchester United and Wolves resume their battle for a place in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup on Wednesday; supporters attending the replay at Old Trafford in midweek will hope to see much more excitement than the first game between the clubs produced.

Both Wanderers and United made changes for their Third Round bout at Molineux on January 4th and that in turn led to a drab 0-0 affair, marked by disjointed football and low-quality play.

There is a danger of a repeat scenario playing out this week, with both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Nuno Espirito Santo expected to shuffle their packs again, though the respective managers will be keen to push for victory to avoid a potentially gruelling period of extra time.

United come into Wednesday’s replay in good spirits after their comfortable 4-0 win over Norwich on Saturday, though little can be taken in terms of bigger-picture thinking from a victory over the Premier League’s weakest outfit. The triumph did extend United’s impressive home record by one more game, however, and the club’s 3-1 Carabao Cup derby reverse a week ago remains their only loss in 15 competitive fixtures at Old Trafford.

Wolves were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw at home to Newcastle the same day as United’s big win over the Canaries, though Wanderers were denied a win by a couple of stunning Martin Dubravka saves. The draw extended Wanderers’ run of games without a win to four. But though they travel to Manchester in less than ideal form, meeting a United team Wolves have yet to lose to since their promotion should create little fear.

Wolves are unbeaten in five matches (two wins, three draws) against United since 2018, though the clean sheet they secured against them at Molineux earlier this month was the first time they kept them out. The same is also true for United, however, who stopped Wolves scoring against them for the first time in two years in that game; the statistics suggest both teams should get back into the goal-getting groove this week.

While Wolves don’t tend to ship many, they do concede consistently, and Wanderers’ blank against United was their only clean sheet in their last seven matches. Away from Molineux, Wolves have conceded in 100% of their last 10 assignments, though they fired back with goals of their own in 90% of those games. Clean sheets are also incredibly rare for a United defence that have kept their opponents out just five times in their last 16 attempts; and in four of their last 13 at Old Trafford.

United have scored every single time they have run out at the Theatre of Dreams this term, however, and we expect that record to be maintained against Wolves this week. With the teams’ inability to attain shutouts well established, we think both teams will score.

United and draw-specialists Wolves (eight draws from their last 20 games) finished level in each of their two previous meetings this season. With the teams looking well-matched, we think their Old Trafford replay will see extra time.

MUN VS WOL: Head-to-head

Eight of the former eleven wins went to Manchester United.

Ten of the previous thirteen victories went to the teams that had home advantage.

Disregarding a single 1-1 draw in 2018, Manchester United hold a 100% winning record at their home in the past two decades.

MUN VS WOL: Predicted starting lineup (XI)

Manchester United: De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Maguire, Lindelöf, Williams; Fred, Matic; Greenwood, Pereira, Rashford; Martial.

Wolves: Patrício; Doherty, Coady, Dendoncker, Saïss, Otto; Traoré, Moutinho, Neves, Neto; Jiménez.

MUN VS WOL: Best players

Manchester United: Marcus Rashford

In what’s been another topsy-turvy season for Man Utd, one player has seen his stock rise considerably through strong and consistent performances. Marcus Rashford is fulfilling the potential many envisaged when he spectacularly broke through under Louis van Gaal in spring 2016.

Key stat: Rashford is Man Utd‘s leading goalscorer in all competitions this season (19).

Wolves: Raúl Jiménez

Could Raúl Jiménez be wearing Man Utd‘s iconic red jersey the next time he plays at Old Trafford? Recent stories have suggested the Mexican marksman, who’s enjoying another prolific campaign for Wolves, is of interest to the Red Devils. For now, Jiménez’s priority is to cause Ole Gunnar Solskjaer‘s men further headaches at the back.

Key stat: Jiménez has been involved in three goals (one goal and two assists) in six matches against Man Utd.
