Born in a cricketing family, Martin Crowe was born in Auckland on 22nd September 1962. His father played first-class cricket for Wellington and Canterbury. His mother played tennis and golf. His brother Jeff Crowe also played cricket during his time in international cricket. Martin’s first cousin, Russel Crowe is a famous movie star. Martin Crowe is still considered as one of the finest batsmen in the history of New Zealand cricket. He was one of the most thorough batsmen of his time.

His domestic first-class debut was for Auckland at the age of 17 against Canterbury. He scored 51. At 18, he was named New Zealand’s Young Cricketer of the Year. His international career began in 1982 against Australia at the age of 19. At the age of 23, he scored his first century at Lords. He ended with a statistics of 17 test centuries which included great innings of 299 in Wellington against Sri Lanka. During the 1992 cricket world cup, under his leadership, the team reached the semi-finals where they lost to Pakistan. He played his last international game in 1995 at the age of 33. He played a total of 77 test matches and 143 one -day internationals. After retiring from international cricket he became a popular television commentator. Among his many feats, he was also known for mentoring Ross Taylor. He was also awarded the ICC Hall of Fame status. His last major public appearance was when he had delivered a warm tribute to Daniel Vettori on the latter’s retirement.
In 2011, he did play a game for a local club when he was 48 years old. He was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2012 and passed away at the age of 53 in 2016. He is survived by his wife, daughter, and step-children.
