He had started playing for South Australia and made his first-class debut there. The Australian selectors were interested in his selection but he finally decided to come back to New Zealand and started playing for Auckland. He made the selection a year later after his brother Martin Crowe made his debut in 1983. It happened many times that both brothers were together at the crease at a particular time, batting. In the year 1983, Jeff Crowe made his international debut against Sri Lanka. His first one-day international (ODI) match was against Australia in 1983.

He played his last ODI  and test match against Australia in 1990. After his retirement from international cricket, he again had a small span of playing domestic cricket. Later, he also served as the manager of the New Zealand Cricket team from 1999- 2003. His post-retirement roles also included becoming a match referee in the year 2004. He had officiated 50 matches as match referee by 2012. In 2014, he became only the third match referee to officiate in more than 200 cricket matches which are considered a huge feat. He did have few glitches as a match referee.

He had played a total of 39 test matches and 75 ODIs. Among his many feats is the hundred he scored against Sri Lanka in his first test match which he captained. That was in April of 1987. As captain, he played 16 ODIs winning  4 and in tests, he played 6 matches winning none. At 60 years now, he is still a renowned match referee for the ICC.
