Indian Wrestlers to Compete in Asian Championships After Talent Hunt
The sports ministry has given the green light for Indian wrestlers to participate in the upcoming Asian Championships. However, there’s a twist – the team will be selected through a special talent hunt.
Why are the Asian Championships Important?
The Asian Championships are a big deal for wrestlers because doing well there can help them qualify for the World Championships. The tournament will take place in Amman, Jordan from March 25th to 30th. This will be the first time Indian wrestlers compete this year, as they missed two earlier tournaments because the sports ministry didn’t give permission.
How Will the Team Be Selected?
The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) initially submitted a list of wrestlers for the previous tournaments. But, the sports ministry wants the WFI to follow the correct process for choosing the team. Although the original deadline for entries was March 5th, they can still make changes to the team until March 18th.

To select the best wrestlers, the WFI will hold a talent hunt. First, there will be the Federation Cup in Jalandhar on March 8th and 9th. Top wrestlers like Antim Panghal, Udit, and Sujeet Kalkal are expected to participate. The top three wrestlers from each weight category in this competition, along with those who won medals in the national championship, will move on to the next stage.
The final selection will happen in New Delhi at the Indira Gandhi Stadium on March 11th and 12th. This is where the final team for the Asian Championships will be chosen. The WFI president, Sanjay Singh, says there will be 4-6 wrestlers in each weight category, including freestyle, Greco-Roman, and women’s wrestling.
What Does This Mean for the Wrestlers?
This talent hunt is a good opportunity for wrestlers to show their skills and earn a spot on the Indian team. It also ensures that the selection process is fair and transparent. The wrestlers will need to be at their best to impress the selectors and secure their place in the team.
With the sports ministry’s approval and the talent hunt in place, Indian wrestlers can now focus on preparing for the Asian Championships. Fans are eager to see who will make the team and represent India on the international stage. This new approach to team selection could lead to some exciting new talent emerging in Indian wrestling. We wish all the wrestlers the best of luck in the upcoming competitions.
