ICC CWC 2023: Travis Head expected to join Australia’s World cup squad by Thursday
Travis Head has resumed training in the nets, marking his first session since he sustained a hand fracture in South Africa. He is optimistic about the possibility of joining the World Cup squad in India this Thursday. Last week, Head had his cast removed and is currently facing throwdowns.
Scans indicate that the fracture, caused by fast bowler Gerald Coetzee at Centurion, is healing well, but he still requires final medical clearance before reuniting with the Australian team.
The earliest potential return date for Head seems to be the match against the Netherlands on October 25, although this timeframe may still be somewhat tight. Head’s significance to Australia’s plans was underscored when selectors decided to have only 14 available players for the initial stage of the tournament.
They essentially replaced Ashton Agar with a specialist batsman, Marnus Labuschagne, to compensate for Head’s absence. In ODIs, Head had been in exceptional form, boasting an average of 60.84 and a strike rate of 119.84 since his return in 2022.
Former Australia captain Aaron Finch noted that Head’s absence had a noticeable impact on the team’s early struggles. Australia is yet to register a half-century in the tournament, and they were dismissed for scores of 199 and 177 in their first two games.
However, it will be a significant challenge for Travis Head to come in and perform immediately. While the selectors have high expectations for Head’s capabilities, there is still a possibility they might consider a replacement, especially if Australia fails to secure a victory against Sri Lanka on Monday, which would make their path to the semi-finals more challenging.
