There is no love lost between Getafe and Valencia after a series of heated clashes between the teams last season including a Copa del Rey game which descended into a mass brawl after Los Che secured a dramatic late win. The departure of Marcelino as Valencia coach may have eased some of the tensions but this is still a really big game with the two sides involved in the thick of the battle for Champions League qualification.

Getafe’s remarkable rise under Jose Bordalas hit new heights last weekend as they rose to 3rd place in La Liga with a 2-0 victory at San Mames. That was Geta’s 3rd straight win in La Liga and they’ve taken 18 points from their last 8 games, a record no other team in the Spanish top flight can better. Even the departure of centre-back Leandro Cabrera to Espanyol in January doesn’t seem to have hit them too hard with all of their last three victories coming to nil.

There’s not too much wrong with Valencia’s league form either. They’ve only lost one of their last eight and head into this one following back-to-back home wins to nil against Celta Vigo and Barcelona. There was however a setback in midweek as they crashed out of the Copa del Rey at Granada with their former striker Roberto Soldado doing the damage. Given the results in the subsequent ties this week, they may feel that they’ve really missed an opportunity to go on and defend the trophy they won last season.

Securing a top four finish will be the priority for both of these clubs now though. Getafe are currently two points and two places better off than Valencia and must decide whether to stick with new signing Deyverson in attack here or plump for Jorge Molina. Los Che meanwhile are without Daniel Wass and Francis Coquelin due to suspension but they do have decent options to cover those two.
