Until 2007, Hopkins had returned to the sidelines and was awarded a central contract by reviewing his fine performance in the domestic season of 514 first-class runs with a run rate of 85.66. As a former national youth team player, he switched from Northern Districts to Canterbury and then to Otago, where he continued in the position of a wicketkeeper. Gareth’s strict and flawless batting style paved his way to the New Zealand team for the inaugural World Twenty20 cricket. Still, Hopkins wasn’t destined to play one single match in that tournament. Hence Hopkins again switched himself to the domestic sides once more for the 2007-08 seasons after moving to Auckland.

On his lead, the team of Auckland won continuously in the one-day and Twenty20 domestic tournaments in the 2010-11 seasons. Unfortunately, Hopkins was dropped from the New Zealand’s central contract list in 2011 after his not so impressive performance in the 2010 international matches. The list of major teams in which Gareth Hopkins was a part of are: New Zealand, Auckland, Canterbury, New Zealand A, New Zealand Academy, Northern Districts, Otego and South Island. In his professional cricket career, Hopkins had been a part of 4 test matches, 25 one day internationals, 10 T20 internationals, 158 first-class matches, 203 lists A matches and 83 T20 matches in total, in which he played the role of a wicketkeeper right-handed batsman.
