On 31st March 2001, he made his international test cricket debut against Australia, whereas his ODI debut was on September 2000 against the Zimbabwe international cricket team. He played in the T20 format of the game as well, wherein his debut was in February 2005 against Australia. He mainly played as a bowler for his teams. He has taken about 77 wickets in Test format of the game and in the ODI format, he took around 110 wickets.

Daryl Tuffey was dropped out of the New Zealand team by coach John Bracewell, who said that he is suffering from a lack of confidence. He also faced charges of misconduct for an injury that he suffered and for that, he was fined near about $1000. But due to his previous performances, the selectors were bound to choose him for the team where he made a comeback in October 2005 in a tour against Australia. He was also chosen in a one-day squad of the 2007 World Cup Team in West Indies. However, many people were not happy about the selection as he was not considered a strong player to have qualified in the World Cup team. He played his last international test match in March 2010, ODI in November 2010 and T20 in February 2010 wherein he played against Australian cricket team.
