More Details about Zaheer Khan and COE:

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly set to appoint former India pace spearhead Zaheer Khan in a key role to groom young fast bowlers at the Centre of Excellence (COE) in Bengaluru. This development comes at a crucial time for Indian cricket, especially with the increasing workload across formats and the need to build a strong pace battery for the future.

The position has remained vacant for some time following the retirement of former bowling coach Troy Cooley. Cooley played an instrumental role in shaping India’s fast-bowling structure during his tenure. His departure created a void that the BCCI has been keen to fill with someone possessing both international pedigree and a deep understanding of Indian conditions.

The BCCI has officially invited applications for the role, signaling a structured and transparent recruitment process. However, sources indicate that Zaheer Khan has shown strong interest in taking up the responsibility. His experience, tactical acumen, and leadership qualities make him a strong contender for the post.

According to a BCCI source, a batch of fast bowlers from various state associations has been invited for a specialized fast-bowling camp scheduled from February 28 to March 2 at the COE in Bengaluru. The camp is expected to function under Zaheer’s guidance if the appointment materializes. Head of COE VVS Laxman has reportedly taken a keen interest in strengthening the fast-bowling program, emphasizing long-term development and workload management.

“Zaheer is very keen to take up coaching roles. He was involved with Lucknow Super Giants and believes he can help the next generation of cricketers. It’s a positive sign that a fast bowler of his stature has shown interest in BCCI programs. However, it remains to be seen whether he is ready to commit to a full-time role at the COE,” the source added.

Zaheer Khan’s potential appointment could be a transformative step. During his playing career, he was known for his ability to swing the ball both ways, execute reverse swing, and lead India’s pace attack in overseas conditions. His understanding of biomechanics, rhythm, and tactical variations could significantly benefit young pacers who aspire to represent India across formats.

India’s recent success in international cricket has been heavily dependent on its fast-bowling depth. From Test matches in challenging overseas conditions to high-intensity white-ball tournaments, the demand for skilled pacers has increased exponentially. A structured fast-bowling program at the COE would not only focus on skill development but also injury prevention, strength conditioning, mental toughness, and match awareness.

Moreover, Zaheer’s appointment would send a strong message about integrating former Indian players into the coaching ecosystem. For years, foreign coaches have played key roles in shaping India’s bowling structure. While their contribution has been valuable, there is growing sentiment that experienced Indian cricketers should also be entrusted with nurturing the next generation. This move could mark a shift toward a more indigenous and sustainable coaching framework.

The COE in Bengaluru has already established itself as a premier high-performance center equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including sports science labs, rehabilitation units, and advanced analytics support. With someone like Zaheer at the helm of fast-bowling development, the program could reach new heights by combining modern technology with practical international experience.

Another crucial aspect would be talent identification. With domestic cricket producing promising pacers regularly, structured camps like the upcoming one could serve as platforms to monitor and groom raw talent early. Early technical corrections and fitness planning can significantly enhance career longevity.

Ultimately, the success of this initiative will depend on execution, clarity of vision, and long-term commitment. If Zaheer Khan officially takes charge, it could redefine India’s fast-bowling roadmap for the next decade. His presence would inspire young pacers and strengthen India’s ambition of dominating world cricket across formats.
