Senior Career

Stephan Swanepoel was a member of the Namibian national team that competed in the 2003 Cricket World Cup, Namibia’s first-ever appearance in the tournament. In five of the six group stage matches during his nation’s historic first World Cup appearance in 2003, Stephan Swanepoel opened the batting alongside Jan-Berry Burger. In what was regarded as Namibia’s first-ever international cricket match, first-ever ODI match, and first-ever World Cup match, he made his One Day International (ODI) debut on February 10, 2003, against neighbors Zimbabwe at the 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup. Stephan Swanepoel’s overall 2003 World Cup campaign was disappointing as he managed only 43 runs in the five games Stephan Swanepoel played. In addition, his five World Cup match appearances were the only international games Stephan Swanepoel was able to play as Namibia did not get to play any official international matches until 2019. His final One Day International match was played for Namibia against the reigning world champions Australia in the group stage. Namibia was soundly defeated by a score of 256 runs. Stephan Swanepoel was pulled out of Namibia’s lineup for their last World Cup group stage match against the Netherlands, and Morné Karg took his place, opening the batting for Namibia.

On April 23, 2004, while playing for Namibia in the 2004 ICC Intercontinental Cup, he made his first-class debut against Uganda. Stephan Swanepoel participated in the 2004 ICC Six Nations Challenge as a member of the Namibian team. Stephan Swanepoel also competed for Namibia in the 2005 ICC Trophy, where they placed sixth overall.

On July 28, 2005, at the Wanderers Cricket Ground in Windhoek, Stephan Swanepoel played one of his most memorable innings against the visiting New Zealanders, which included players like Shane Bond, Daniel Vettori, Kyle Mills, and Chris Martin. Stephan Swanepoel smashed a 43-ball 50 and formed a crucial 66-run partnership with tailender Kola Burger for the tenth wicket, which came off just about six overs, to give Namibia some hope in a challenging 331-run chase. Stephan Swanepoel and Kola Burger helped the Namibian team advance from a precarious position of 235/9 to 301 in the high-scoring run chase, but Namibia ultimately fell short by just 29 runs and missed out on pulling off a memorable, mammoth upset victory over the Black Caps. Kola Burger provided strong support for Swanepoel, who was dismissed by James Franklin as the last man in Namibia’s innings after scoring a quickfire unbeaten knock of 45 runs off just 18 deliveries. However, Namibia’s hopes quickly faded after Swanepoel’s dismissal, as Burger was left stranded for Namibia.

Stephan Swanepoel participated in the Intercontinental Cup in 2006-2007 as well. Stephan Swanepoel’s last outing in a professional cricket match was on February 8, 2009, in a List A game for Namibia versus Free State as part of the Provincial One-Day Challenge.
