At the age of 18 in the years 1996-97, he made his debut and became the youngest player to represent New Zealand in the Test Cricket. Vettori started his career from a very early childhood when he was in school. Born in Auckland, brought up in Hamilton, he started playing cricket in his schools as a medium pacer and then slowly shifted into his spinning skills and became a spinner. Though he started off as a bowler, his batting skills were not that good, but he worked tremendously on his batting skills and scored 3000 test runs in his career which includes 5 centuries and several half centuries. He was considered to be an all-rounder cricketer.

Vettori is the eighth player in world Test history who took 300 wickets and scored 3,000 runs. He is best known for his accuracy, flight, and speed variation. He maintained a Test batting average of 30 which made him one of the most consistent batsmen in the New Zealand cricket team. In IPL fourth season, he was contracted by Royal Challengers Bangalore for US$550,000.

Vettori resigned from the captaincy of the National side after the 2011 World Cup when they lost the semi-final match to Sri Lanka. He then handed over the captaincy to Ross Taylor. He finally announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket following the 2015 Cricket World Cup. He is one of the rarest players those who barely lose their temper and those who barely wear prescribed specs while playing in the pitch.
