A fine all-rounder representing New Zealand, Bevan Congdon was a middle-order batsman and a medium pacer. He was born on February 11th, 1938 in Motueka, Tasman. In his career, he played a total of 61 test matches and 11 one day internationals (ODIs). He scored a total of 3448 runs at an average of 32.22 in test matches. His statistics in ODIs were. He had the privilege of being the caption of the New Zealand side in its first official ODI match which was against Pakistan in 1973 at the Lancaster Park stadium. One of his many achievements was hitting back to back centuries against England in 1973.

The scores of his back to back centuries were 176 and 175. He had also hit back to back centuries against the West Indian team in the year 1972. He was considered to be a shrewd leader and his batting was considered among the greatest in the world. In balling, his best was a 5 wicket haul against India in 1975.
From a batsman, he became a bowler and then went on to lead the team. His test debut was versus Pakistan on January 22nd, 1965 at Basin Reserve. He played his last test against England on August 24th, 1978 at Lords. His ODI debut was against Pakistan on February 11th, 1973 at AMI stadium. His last ODI was against England on July 17th, 1978 at Old Trafford. In 61 tests, he took a total of 69 wickets at an average of 36.51.
In ODIs his bowling statistics were 7 wickets in 11 matches at an average of 41. He retired from the game in 1978. Bevan Congdon never had a fixed batting slot. In the earlier days of his career, he used to bat at No. 4. Later he also opened the innings. But he preferred playing at the number 3 position. Playing at No. 3 position, he scored six of his seven test centuries. This great cricketer passed away at the age of 79 years in February of 2018. He is survived by his wife, daughters, and grandchildren.
